I like it....what to pay for it $ 1400?

Hey guys, I have a chance to buy a 29-5 7 1/2" barrel full underlug with box and papers. It is factory engraved "The Attack" and is unfired and comes withe Smith and Wesson drawing of the gun and engraving.
Any idea what I should offer? It's beautiful but I plan on shooting it. That's my idea of owning revolvers.
Comments please !

Hi Bluespruce!

This appears to be one of the "Twelve Revolvers" that were manufactured in the early 1990. I don't have the book in front of me however this is part of a set (series of 12 revolvers...gun of the month type thing). I think each had a theme with the one you describe as "The Attack." 1 of 500 or so. Will have look it up.

I don't have any input on what these go for...I would imagine if you were looking to complete the set of 12 revolvers you would be willing to pay a premium. For me a M29 is a M29.

That's a very good point. See, you're keeping me grounded which is what I needed.
I am not completing a set as you mentioned...already have a 629 classic deluxe , but man oh man that 29 "The Attack" sure looks nice.
And here's the tug of war I am fighting --my son is a Navy Seal and he loves S & W 29's and he had that gleam in his eye when I forwarded the picture of it.

Hard to set a price on these guns. I got this 29-5 (#355 of 500) about 6 years ago, the first in the series. Nothing but the gun so I had to buy a box for it. The classics are definitely worth more although all the 29-5 had the "endurance upgrade." If'n it ain't coming outta the "rice and beans money" go for it. Joe

Good Lord you guys are so helpful....seriously. I'm torn about it and now that we're using the "rice and beans" analogy and I'm not starving, oh man what a decision. My son wouldn't say anything (outwardly) to sway me but he just had that Tone in his voice and that "look". His motto is "America doesn't owe me anything, I just love my country". And of course you know the Seal motto "the only easy day was yesterday".
Jeeeeze what to do?

Pharmer, what did your "Hostiles " go for at the time of purchase?

My records show I paid $505 (guy insisted on the extra $5 for the rug it was in) Thanksgiving 2009. I haven't shot this one, I have a 6 1/2" 629 classic that gets all my .44 ammo. Joe

At a $1400.00 sticker I myself would leave it unfired then buy a 29 shooter grade,,, just the way I look at things.

But then again a person can't make them all queens... Glad it's your problem.

One thing nobody's spoken to ... the gun's worth what it's worth to you, and you are going to shoot it. The fact that you like the way it looks makes it worth a premium to you, but probably not quite as much as $1400.00 for what you are going to do with it. But what is that "look" on your son's face and in his eyes worth to you? That's a question only you can answer!!

But I know that look. And it doesn't come along every day! For me, it's a priceless thing, and becomes more compelling if the rice and beans money ain't jeopardized. Opportunities sometimes don't come along all the time, and many times don't hang around for long. And when they are gone, they are .... well, just gone! I know I'm not helping with your conservation of discretionary funds, and I admit right up front that it's easier for me to spend your money than my own. BUT, I think, while reading between your lines just a bit, that "look" makes a difference in this case ... I think! Again, only you can say, but for whatever it might (or might not) be worth, somehow, I don't think you might regret the "look" you are likely to see if you can show your son this very nice bit of iron in person!

I'm just thinking and typing here ... dangerous for me and for you both! Just stirrin' the pot a little and then I will stand by and watch and keep my mouth shut! You are welcome, and good luck with your decision. I'm just sayin', sometimes ... sometimes, it ain't about the money (if you have it unencumbered on hand!!

OMGosh you men and women have me pulling my hair out. You're all correct in every assertion and reasonable statements. Yes, since the gun is not going to be a safe queen the laser etching will not be pristine forever like a collector revolver. Yes, I was going to try to make an accurate shooter out of it in a father /son duo project just because of the time he's giving to his country and his love of country. It just seemed to be the perfect 29 for such a grateful and courageous young man.
But now you have all enlightened me and I'm going to step away from it and listen to you. You're wiser than I am, you know your 29's and from the majority consensus I realize that it's to much $$ for the revolver.

For that money you did the right thing i would say.

You and your boy can begin the "search" together
to find a nice 29-2 or so which will be a good shooter
and hold it's value on down the line.

It's not pinned or recessed, but it does have the full endurance package since it's a -5 model. And no MIM parts either.

At Bluespruce3006, I bought one of the 12 Revolvers collection myself a couple of years ago off GB. Mine was the model 27 "Outnumbered" and came NIB and unfired and I got it for $700. No doubt the poor pictures the seller had uploaded to GB for the sale played a good part in why I got it at such a good price. It's a really nice pistol and shoots well. But you did the right thing in walking away from that 29 at $1400. That's just way too much. I wouldn't value it any higher than any other 29-5 in the same condition unless you were buying it as a part of a complete 12 Revolvers collection having matching numbers.

Full underlug? The SCSW says the "Hostiles" & "The Attack" are both PC# 101207. The Hostiles is partial underlug.

Still, if it's LNIB, & you like the long barrel (7-1/2" wasn't that common) you'd pay almost that if it was made new today.

If you can get it for the $1200-1300 you mentioned, & it tickles your sweet spot, I'd say go for it if you've got the $$.

Don't Do It

As others have mentioned, they typically are not highly sought after and therefore the price should be a lot less, especially when it's a broken up set. I went to an auction in June 2014 and they sold 11 out of the 12 revolvers from this series and they sold for an average price of $607 each, including the one you are thinking about. All of these were NIB, too. I know revolver prices have gone up in 2.5 years, but not that much for this particular set.

I would put the $1400 towards another model 29 that was not produced as a collectable.

The "Twelve Revolvers" Limited Edition Set, by Smith & Wesson and Ellett Bros. put this set out in 1990. There was only 500 sets made. The set commemorates the Golden Era of Advertising Illustration & Art in the firearms industry during the 19th century. Each gun in the set is laser etched with one of the original illustrations of the time. The set is complete with a reference book depicting the illustrations and explaining each. There is also blue prints of the laser etching that was done on each gun. The models along with the theme name etched on the barrel are as follows:
