On July 7th I had surgery for three hernias. Two were not so bad. According to the photograph the doctor showed my wife, the bad one was so large she could put her fist through the hole. Here it is now about four weeks later and I'm starting to feel just about normal! Hallelujah!

Over the last week I've been able to do some light jogging/trotting. And with appropriate music I've been able to do a little dance move called the twist. Remember the twist? Lots of fun!

So... today I get the bulletins finished for three of the four churches I pastor. I still have one set of bulletins to finish, but I'll do that tomorrow after lunch. After helping my wife put three bushels of peas in the freezer I was delighted when she said she wanted to grill pork chops for supper! Wonderful!

Given that there were several hours before supper, I took Molly the wonder dog out for a very easy pace jog... maybe 2.5 miles in 40 minutes, like I said very easy jog. The temperature was right at 88 so I figured that was enough for Molly. Then... I got an idea. Have you ever had an idea? Be aware, not all ideas are necessarily good ideas. In fact, some of them are just plain stupid. After reading the following you can form your own opinion as to whether or not my idea was good or otherwise.

After putting Molly in the backyard I told my wife I was going back out for a bit. If I'd told her what I was going to do, she'd have hit the roof. Since I am not yet up to climbing ladders and fixing roof's, I figured I'd just keep quiet about things. I got out on the road. I made sure there was no traffic and started a little run. It wasn't much. But, it was up some very sharp hills, lots of curves and stuff. Ended up doing 1.25 miles in a hair over 13 minutes and ended up with 2.0 miles done in 21 minutes flat. I know that won't win any races with folks that are in condition. But, given that I am 57 years old, given that I am about 10 lbs. heavier than I was before the hernias stopped me from exercising and given that I haven't run any distance beyond the bathroom since about November of last year, I figure that 21 minutes for 2 miles is at least acceptable.

However, nothing in life is free! There was a price to pay for the above little bit of fun. By the time I got home I'd stopped sweating. My wife, the resident nurse and medical expert, stuck me in the tub and filled it with cold water. Happily she me the first of two 20 oz. glasses of sweet lemon tea. About an hour later I started feeling much better. A little while ago we had dinner. That pork chop was at least and inch and a quarter thick... maybe an inch and a half thick! It was perfect. Man what a man meal! Huge grilled pork chop and a whopper baked potato w/ butter, etc. Now all I've got to do is study for tomorrow and rest a little.

I don't know how your day went. I hope everything was wonderful for you and your loved ones. But running/jogging has since 1998 been a part of my everyday life. I've been known to go out at night w/ a flashlight when there was not time during the day to go running. It was really wonderful to be able to get out today and actually run, to run without my right side exploding, to run till I was about to drop and then have no problems beyond just getting myself a little bit overheated.

Tomorrow... I probably will not go out for a hard run. But, after the afternoon worship service I hope to be home by about 4:30 p.m. It just may be possible that I will get to go to the local range and shoot my beloved 18-3. If that doesn't work out, then maybe Monday I can go shooting. It'd be nice as I am not sure how long it's been since I shot a revolver... maybe since March. It just got to where it hurt to much to hold my arms out extended with a handgun. Now it doesn't hurt at all! Sincerely. brucev.

Inspiring post. Congrats and welcome back (or well on your way to it ;)).

Glad to hear you are getting back doing the kinds of things you enjoy. Big word of caution, however; TAKE YOUR TIME doing anything that involves much exertion. Even when you are feeling great, go easy!

I'm 48, and had my gall bladder removed a few years ago. A couple/few months after surgery, I was feeling great! I've always been in great shape (always joked that "I've got the strength of 3 men") and wanted to get 'back at it.'. Started working out again, and ended up with an upper abdominal hernia from doing a pull up... Not good. I could not believe that's all it took to cause a big problem.

Suffered with the hernia for a few years, and finally had surgery to repair it this past spring, and it was a pretty major surgery/incision, etc. Doctor stitched a mesh patch into my abdominal wall. I'm just now feeling up to doing more (now up to the "strength of 1 1/2 men...), but trust me, I'm going to go easy, and take several months before trying to things that take a lot of exertion. This summer, I didn't water ski for the first time, since I was 4 years old. Restraint!

I'm hoping I can bounce back from all this and keep doing all the things I enjoy, so for the first time, I'm trying to be patient and prudent. I encourage you to do the same, if you are an active person. Take care.
