I love k frames

Not too long back, I picked up a S&W 686. I know that the 686 can handle the .357 with no problem. I think that it is important that a gun fit a person well. Nothing seems to fit and feel so good in my hands as a S&W K frame. Unless I was in the woods or on a trail, I would feel pretty well armed with a fixed sight, heavy barrel K frame stoked with .38 Spcl +P ammo. A tie for runner up would be a Ruger Security Six/Police Service Six. I handled a pretty well worn Model 10 today. It felt great but the $399 asking price was a little steep for the condition.

Sheepdawg, love the Model 15 snubby. Kind of a bucket list gun for me! Don't know if they made the Model 15 snubby in a round butt configuration or not, but if I ever get one, I will send it off to get round butted.

I'll jump in here as well. Been kind of on a K frame buying kick since the beginning of summer. Two 15-3 snubs, a 19-3, a K-38 Heavy masterpiece and a 3" 10-8 (with a 3" 65-3 I bought off a buddy a couple years ago). I have to agree that these k frames fit me pretty good!

SO IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU'LL BE FINE WITH THE M686 THAT YOU HAVE.....

I SEE LITTLE ADVANTAGE TO BE GAINED WITH A HEAVY BARREL K FRAME, OF A DIFFERENT MODEL......

I like them, too. We used to carry them. I recently bought a new stainless steel model 66 short barrel. I bought a new model 60, too. I had them when I was first hired, sold them when the semi-auto craze hit, and I missed them. I prefer the model 65, but I do not buy used guns.

I have a few K frames. A regular 65-5. 65-5 Ladysmith and a 19-3 nickel 2.5"

Also I have a nice 19-6 4" that I put some magnas on.

And then I have my 64-5. This started life with a DAO forged hammer and MIM trigger. I switched them out with all forged parts from a 10-10. I rarely do any double action shooting.

I like K frames also as I own a Model K38 pre model 14 with 6 inch barrel, a Model 17-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel, and a Model 18 with a 4 inch barrel

dscampbell - What is the purpose of the grips on your Model 65? First time I've ever seen that.

Those are bianchi lightning grips. They act as a hammer shroud.

Advantage of the K frame .357 Magnum is its smaller cylinder diameter compared to L or N frames.

The K Magnum Achilles heel is the barrel forcing cone flat spot at the "6" O clock position which is prone to cracking with lighter 110/125 grain Magnum loads.

The .357 "L" frame was introduced to address K Magnum forcing cone weakness ,
when the "L" frame was introduced S&W had already ceased the P&R features,
In other words no P&R .357 Mag L frame revolvers exist..

(Recessed cylinders have continued on all S&W .22 caliber revolvers to date)

The K vs L Magnum debate shifted with the introduction of 7 shot L frame cylinders.

( IMO the 686-4+ arguably being the high water mark of 686 production).

Another interesting L frame variant is the 7 shot Pre IL 686-5+ Mountain Gun which when empty is actually lighter than the Model 66 .

Basically the K Magnum is lighter but the L Magnum is more robust and can accommodate a 7 round cylinder due to its larger cylinder diameter.

A 66-1 was my first S&W, which was only one of many police trade-ins going for $199 everywhere you looked back then. In fact, I went back for another one because I liked it so much. I still have that one, along with a 2.5" 66-1, a 2" 64-6, a 64-5, a 15-3 and a 17-2.

I'm going to have them out for a photo shoot pretty soon. Seems like I'm missing one somehow, ......... oh yeah, the 19-4 I swapped for an N frame 25-5 a couple of weeks ago. Here's a couple of my favorites.

I like them with magnas with a grip adapter best for shooting,
