Proxibid have just updated their website and software and the first time I logged in it started bleating that my "profile" was incomplete. Their system asked me to redo my security questions (OK) then it insisted on having my date of birth. Guess again. I am fed up with this incremental erosion of my privacy and control of MY information by folk collecting my data and doing who knows what with it. Government is bad enough, but some bunch I cannot even vote out, no way.

I find it interesting that their helpdesk has yet to email me a reply to my question about this "requirement". Perhaps others are balking, too. If I do not receive a satisfactory response I guess that is one line of online auctions I will no longer access. By the looks of it, GB are going the same way and my answer to them is the same. So, ya'll have a good time buying the Smiths and milsurps I can no longer get at. Just don't be surprised if your junk snail mail and email increases and you find lots of other folk with "your" ID.

Steve-

Good on you! I wouldn't tell 'em anything, either. You just don't know who they're selling that info to. I DO NOT bank Online!

But I don't bid for guns Online either. I NEVER buy a gun that I haven't personally examined. I have a pal who sometimes buys by mail. He's less critical than I am, but he's been disappointed about 40% of the time. (I'm guessing that those selling from this board are above the norm. And that they don't ask too many intrusive questions.)

I've not heard of Proxibid; thanks for the heads up. I certainly agree with the view you've expressed. My problem, though, is that the shops in my area and beyond virtually never have any used Smiths in stock. I could wait literally for years for something I'm interested in to show up on their shelves. Consequently every single gun I own was obtained online. I had no problems with any of the transactions, either. I examine feedback, email for a phone number, and call and talk with the seller whenever possible.

Nevertheless, as I indicated, I share your sentiments re: too many outfits wanting my personal information.

Andy

Why not just lie? Not like they are going to check on it, or care. They just want to make sure that you are of age to be using the service.

Has our society really sunk to the level that to maintain our privacy we have to sacrifice our integrity? If I have to tell somebody something about me, it will be the truth. If somebody wants me to tell them something about me I feel is beyond their need to know, I will politely tell them to MYOB. No doubt others will furnish false info and Proxibid will know it is going on. However, as the proper "lip service" has been paid to the "requirement", probably set by others, they will say very little. Now, what does that say about Proxibid as an organisation that they are prepared to play such games?

Frankly, I blame the "information free for all " groups on the Internet and the results of a certain well known date, the anniversary of which is fast approaching. The instigator of that atrocity must have had many cracked ribs from laughing before the SEALS got him, laughter at our ability to destroy ourselves from within far more effectively that he could ever have dreamed.

Steve, I say get yourself a cold one, kick back and admire the sunset. (Or a cuppa joe and the sunrise.) Life's too short to be lettin' other folks get you all riled up. :)

If you don't like it, just don't play their game.
