Saturday night, as he was locking up, I told the local dealer I'd take the six inch 57 no dash he had for $700! It is used but pretty pristine, although it doesn't even have the original grips. I've been kicking myself all day. I get carried away by nice guns too easily

Anybody else have that problem?

Thats a hundred high for sure but remember, there is no such thing as spending too much, only spending it too soon!

In a year it'll look like a bargain

PS - Once you shoot it you'll forget about the cost, my 6" M57 is a sweet shooter.

The only problem that I have had is not buying firearms that I really wanted when I found them in pirstine condition. My dad, who was a D.D.S. and an M.D., practiced denistry for 2 years and medicine for 29 years. He always wanted a 56' T-Bird and never bought one before he died, to early at age 67. That story caused a very good friend of mine to buy a BWM Z3 that he could not justify. The moral of the story is, of course, that life is to short. So, if you are happy and its what you wanted, who gives a rat's a**! Don't look back, look forward to shooting the Model 57 and buying all the accessories that it needs. After all, its a classic Smith & Wesson and who could be anything but happy after getting one in the condition that you wanted!

I don't know if this is the best place for sympathy toward retrospective consideration of gun purchases.

New gun? HOORAY!!!

Spent too much? On what? A new gun? Did you say you got a new gun? HOORAY!!!

We're a simple bunch, really.

New gun = hooray.

We've all done it....don't be so hard on yourself. It's not like you bought a Taurus for seven bills....you got a fine quality firerarm that will last at least a lifetime with proper care.

Brian~

Hey, you were not that far off the mark...I saw a 6" 57-1 at Cabela's earlier this winter for $699.00.

You bought what you liked. I'm in full agreement with Mr. baglorious...

1) we are a simple bunch (we love guns and for our fellow members to acquire them too).

2) New gun? HOORAY!!! That's just how I feel...you got a truly great collect able and shoot able gun and YOU now get to take it out of the safe whenever you want to look it over, clean it or shoot it. It's YOURS...HOORAY!!! I vote you did the right thing...BUT...where are the PICS????? No pics...NOT good!

Happy New Year Mr. Galt!!!

I passed on a number of hard to find (how about a like new Model 58 for $425 last year) Smiths and regretted it later because I really didn't want them or I thought I had better things to do with my money. If you really want it it's worth paying a little extra to get it. Like they say, in a year or two it will be worth even more than you gave. Shoot the heck out of it and enjoy it.

I'll try to keep that philosophy in mind

Bear in mind that you supported the local economy with an infusuion of capital. What you did is guite laudable, Sir. well done.

And you got a NEW GUN! Hooray!

Keep the big picture in mind... the cost will average out with other purchases and become reasonable over time.

For instance, if you find another Smith at a bargain price and purchase it, the savings from that one will partially offset the premium you paid for the M57.

I overpaid $100 for a M28, but later got a great deal on a NIB (new in box) M41 and saved $150 on what they usually go for. So between the two, I still came out $50 ahead.

In the stock market it's called dollar cost averaging... I plan to keep buying S&W's until my dollar cost average per gun drops to $1.98

i do that stuff all the time. i can assure you, looking back over the last 20yrs. quality guns no longer made always surpass the price you paid. many of mine doubled in value, some even more!

J. Galt,

Nice score on the 57. Consider the hundred bucks a compliment to your good taste and enjoy your revolver. I have a four inch "no dash" 57 and it is one of my favorite guns.

I remember wondering if I lost my good sense in 1976,newly married, just started a new job and purchased a new 6 inch Python for $253.50.Believe me it all balances out in the end.Maybe the dealer will help you out a little on your next purchase.Happy New year to all.Dave

Just think how sad you would be if by Tuesday you had decided that you really wanted that 57, and returned to find it gone.

Ever have that happen at a gunshow?

Same deal!!

I paid too much for an S&W I really wanted once. Then, about a year later, I found another one (same model) priced under market value. I bought that one too. I figure that if I average it out, I paid a fair price for both of them. Enjoy that 57!
