Word has it we in the DC area are about to be walloped with a blizzard. They figure 8-24 inches around here. I need a good snow shovel since I left my snow thrower back in New Mexico at the casa. Suggestions?

I'm hearing 12 - 18 in my area.

I just buy regular old snow shovels. They last year's and years. Plastic shovels work fine but later when the snow is hardened they can break. Metal type bend eventually.

Here's a trick. Don't do it all at once. I go out 2 or 3 times. That way it's faster, Les heavy and the driveway stays clearer. But overall it's just faster.

For serious manual digging, +1 on the grain shovel - aluminum preferred. Snow slides right off. Although the steel ones are better for chopping, they are heavy and then get heavier when the snow freezes to it. Although, I have been known to keep a can of WD-40 in my pocket, which makes it slick for a while.

I shovel a lot of snow.

I like the shallow plastic shovels. I don't like the ones with the metal edge. The plastic edge wears out, but it also cleans the snow off of concrete a lot better.

They are also pretty cheap. I just bought 3 of them for $9.00 each at Wally World.

Steel reinforced plastic works best for me on wood decks, concrete, and asphalt, although it won't stand up to ice. For digging out around vehicles or clearing non paved surfaces, I like the plastic grain shovels because snow is less likely to stick on the slick plastic.

Call me a pansy but I only use a shovel when the snow is only a couple inches deep.Anything deeper and the snow thrower comes out.I also do my neighbors.I'd rather spend 30 minutes looking like a fool than an hour shoveling and having to get out the heating pad afterwards.

Where are these 14yr olds you speak of? Around here they only come out when the snow is 3-6inches.
