Anybody out there with a recommendation for a decent compact tripod for my old (used to be my grandmother's!) rather hefty Bausch and Lomb spotting scope? The scope probably weighs two or three pounds.

This would be strictly for the range. I had one but it wasn't sturdy enough so I want to buy something decent and be done with it. I looked online but it's difficult really know what's good.

It must be no longer than 16" in length packed up in my Pelican case.

Bench or ground? Sitting, standing or prone? Is the 'scope a "straight thru" or does it have an angled eyepiece.?

You might go to a good camera shop and see what they have. We actually use a couple of different tripods/scope stands depending on what we are doing. General range use, Freeland scope stand, long range{1000 yard +} Bogen/Manfretto with adjustable head and for use with heavy military range finder , wooden survey type tripod. For a small 3 to 4lb. scope you should also be able to buy one from Cabela's catalog.

I second this choice, especially with a large heavy scope. It will work with straight or angled eyepieces.
I have a similar but cheaper version which I got from them. It doesn't have the precise screw adjustments. I wish I had gotten the better one.

I'm sure you can order the fully adjustable head as a stand alone item, so you should be able to upgrade yours.

I have a Tiltall, which will hold a tank. Very well made and pretty ergonomic. But it's somewhat larger than your requirement. I'm not familiar with their line; perhaps they have a smaller one.

Thanks everyone. I should have been more precise. I'm interested in a table top variety to be placed on a bench at the pistol range (the Kokohead range which is a municipal facility here in Honolulu). This is strictly for standing. It must retract into a package that is less than 16" long. I'll check out your suggestions...mahalo

That Ray Vin is a winner. I'm sold...not cheap but it looks like you get what you pay for. mahalo sar4937!
