OK. I own a lot (and this is an understatement) of S&W's.

I have, what I think, is the complete series of 9mm M&P's (both short and long PC's, the 9L Pro, Standard, Compact and Shield).

I was at the range last night shooting with my daughter and she couldn't get a magazine to stay in the Standard M&P9 she was using. I laughed it off thinking she was doing something wrong but when I tried I couldn't get it to click in either. Then I finally took it out and compared it to the other magazines on the shooting bench. It was 1/2" shorter than the others. I only thought there were three magazines for the M&P 9mm line: (1) the longer one (4.75" on the backside) that fits all of them except the 9C and Shield, (2) the shorter one (3.5" on the backside) that fits the 9C and (3) the Shield is a single stack and easy to recognize.

What does the one that we incorrectly tried to use last night belong to (4.25" on the backside)? It is pictured between the Standard magazine and the Compact magazine.

Thanks!

That's a strange problem. All my 10 round mags look like the one in the middle.

EDIT:
OK, the one in the middle is a .40S&W mag. The one on the right is a 9mm. They should say on the front what caliber they are intended for.

AHA!!! It took me a few moments, but I've figured it out.

The mag in the middle is mismatched. You have a 9mm body on a .40S&W base. This is why it won't seat. The base is too short to allow the body to reach the mag catch.

The 9mm 10 round base has to be longer because the body is shorter to compensate for the round size.

The 9mm body has grooves and the .40S&W body does not.

Sounds like the mystery is solved!

Yes...all of my CA compliant "boxes" are marked 9mm.

I guess this means I either purchased a factory reject or one of the used pistols (PPT) that I purchased had a badly reassembled magazine (perhaps they were cleaning their 9mm and 40 S&W? - lol).

Is there a way to purchase just the correct base to fix that magazine? Or is it just a part magazine now?

Again...thanks for the great responses and help!

I recall reading another post about the same issue. Can't recall if it was here or some California based guns forum.

That OP called S&W and they sent him some for free.

BTW, the mag bodies for the 9mm are the same for the Compact and Fullsize. You can swap the bases out to convert one into the other. I know the FS fit the Compact as is. I use XGrips to cover the extra. However, when I first bought my Compact, there were no 10 round compact mags anywhere. S&W sent me a few free extended bases (with the pinky rest) to swap out. So far I've only swapped out the flat base.

Let us know what they say. BTW: the takedown tool that retains the backstrap fits perfectly to remove the base.

CALIFORNIA MAGS! I never saw any before & was wondering what in the world were they?. They looked absolutely nothing like my 40C or FS 40 mags, LOL. See? I try to learn something new every day.
