I gun store has a 5946 that has been worked on by Novaks. It has Novak sights, been melted, bead blasted, front strap stippled, and probably a trigger job. It has a case colored trigger and bobbed hammer. It seems to be a newer model and is like new, no box, one mag and a pouch. They want $699, 5906's go for $375 in good shape around here. I am not near my SCSW and not sure if the Novak's work added value or took it away. Any opinions?

If you are concerned about ever getting your money back out of it, I think at $700 there is almost no chance of that. Personally, even if I was unconcerned about ever selling it but thought it was a neat gun, I don't think I'd go over $450 for it, but what do I know.

. . . a 5946 that has been worked on by Novaks.

How do you know it was "worked on by Novak"? Without a box (the label with product code, etc.) it's hard to tell what it is. Without documentation, it simply sounds like a 5946 that's been messed with. But that's just, me. FWIW

Because it is stamped with the Novak's logo. I spent some time on the Novak's site, over $600 not counting shipping spent on this gun. It also got a match barrel, a magwell massage and sights. I thought I might simply send in my 5906, and spend less but custom work is expensive. Even the shipping.

I really like Smith DAO's, but I found the 59XX series boring. I'd rather have a PC piece in a major caliber - and those in excellent condition will run from your $700 and up.

The Shorty Forty comes to mind...my only DA/SA Smith other than my nickel 39-2

FWIW, I agree it isn't an "investment" or "rarity" thing, but if you like it and would spend, say $300.00 or more anyway to have Novak customize a stock gun if you bought one, then it is a good deal for you, so why not?

A concern, I guess, is that someone could have had minor work done by Novak and added $25.00 for the Novak etching, and tehn remaining work may or may not be from Novak??

Probably not, though.

That gun came stock from S&W with Novak sights, a bobbed hammer, and relieved front strap. I wonder why someone would pay Novak to do those things all over again?

The sights were switched to a different style, all the DAO's had bobbed hammers from what I can tell, and everything from the checkering on the trigger guard to the magwell was stippled. Someone did spend $600 additional on the work, There is a lesson in there about custom work, if you spend an additional $600 plus shipping on a $300 pistol you still have a $300 pistol not a $900 one. I have wanted a pistol like this from Novak's and spent the money.
