After 15 years there, I let my work know that I plan on leaving in a few months. I'm leaving on good terms. I'm 63. I'm not calling this "retiring" because I do a lot of welding/fabricating/repair work on the side. With my certifications and experience, I stay pretty busy with that and charge a pretty decent hourly rate. I will get a small pension from the job. I will probably wait until I turn 64 to collect Social Security. House is paid for. Only loan I have is my 2021 RAM 3500 which is my mobile welding truck. I think we'll be OK. Been working full-time since I graduated high school in 1977. Worked part time before that. I deserve a break. 😀

I am the same age
If you can wait until you're 67 to Collect SS
You'll get your Full Benefit
Otherwise you get a percentage

Good Luck

Thanks! I've been weighing out the Social Security thing, as to whether to wait a few months until I'm 64 to get a little more or wait until I'm 67 to get the full amount. That's three years worth of payments. Might take a lot of years to recoup that amount if I wait.

I did the same thing in the middle of September. Mine is retirement though. Taking care of Mom, who has dementia. Just turned 60 this month and do not regret it at all to this point.

Really sorry to hear about your Mom. My Mom passed away last year and had dementia. I know how difficult that must be for you. Again, my condolences.

Here's the Chart
Looks like 80% vs 100%

If I did my math correctly, waiting until you're 67 to get 100% versus getting 81.1% from age 64 on...the break even point is around age 80. Average life expectancy for men in US is around 73.

I guess it all depends on your financial condition and your expected longevity...parents age, health, etc.

My father always said to take it as soon as you can; but, he didn't expect to be 83 and in good health.

Check my math, it's late and I may be wrong. ;):D

64 will get there before you know it. Have fun.

Take it from me, 70 will get there before you know it. I'm coming up on 7 years retired and never regretted a minute of it.

My old cardiologist told me to make sure I had something going on to keep my mind active when I retired. It sounds like you have that covered.

Everybody gets a good laugh when I tell them I retired on December 31, 2015 at 3:30 PM. Believe me, I was looking at my watch when I turned the key in the ignition to leave the office for the last time. I wanted to savor the moment.

Congratulations, best wishes and don't look back.

I don't know anyone who ever regretted retirement. Or in your case just slowing down a little. Congrats!!!!!!!

Jimmy regets retirement (medical). I was still "Patroling The Streets" at age 73. My last on duty injury let me so broken up that all the King's men and King's horses couldn't put me back together again. If I was able I would still be "Protecting and Serving"

I left at 63. Took SS then, also. My "breaking even" point was 78 yo. I think 65 1/2 or 66 1/2 I would've gotten full SS, but who knows what's gonna happen? I took it.
Nice to see you have a date planned. That helps a lot to give time to get all the paperwork done ahead of time. Good luck!
Where I retired from, my last couple months I was in my happy place; the "I Don't Give A (Care) Mode!"

I took an early retirement at 58 I think it was. I needed someone to care for my wife, who'd had a ruptured aneurysm in her brain and needed care 24/7. I was worrying about what I was going to do, when my supervisor at work started giving me a ration of you know what about something. Then it hit me..."They'll pay me half this to stay home." So I called the office and told them I wanted to retire. "When do you want to start?" they asked. This afternoon at 4:30. I'm never coming back." "We can do that."

Well, at 4:30, I left, got on my motorcycle and prayed..."Lord, it's in your hands now. You promised to take care of my needs. I know You didn't say anything about wants." It was three days before my supervisor missed me enough to call to find out where I was.

Well, the Lord has never let me down before or after, although I'm sure I've failed Him plenty of times. He's more than taken care of our needs, and thrown in a few "wants" from time to time to boot.

We've done OK. I've worked at something most of the time since then to help out, still do even now, at 70 as much to keep active and from being bored as anything. I have the kind of part time job where the wife can go along with me, so we're together pretty much 24/7. I haven't regreted it for a minute. Every day is a new adventure.

To the OP. Good luck with your retirement Brother. May you enjoy yours as much as I have mine.
