Ever since I sold my .41 mag, I have been trying to get my hands on another smith and I finally did. After searching for the right gun I came across a model 66-2. I had to have it. Mostley for the gun but also for the fact it still had the box and everything from when new. I can't wait to go shooting again.

Use standard loads from any commercial manufacturer....Reloads ...stay in the middle ground. Use 158 grain bullets....

Your 66 will wear out in about the 1-2 million rounds mark

My Model 66-6 is a 2002 "factory test shot" (May 28, 2002 to be precise from the fired case in the serial numbered sealed bag that came with it).

Mine is a 4" and with factory Uncle Mikes which are actually quite pleasant and buffer most of the felt recoil.

I run factory ammo...no handloads, usually Magtech 158 gr SJSP, or (more common when carrying) Remington HTP 180 grain SJHP both supposedly at about 1235 fps.

I have not had any loosening or bad effects show up at all. Like yours, mine has the last of the one piece heavy barrels, and the adjustable sights means that my Model 65 (basically same gun but fixed sights) is now mostly sitting in the safe unexercised cause me old 73 year eyes just pick up the red insert and the white outline so much quicker and get POA and POI to match up.

Of course I do have 1 feature that you don't have (Long sigh) and that is the infamous, dreaded, (yes still have the 2 keys) Infernal Lock.

So if anything starts to go on my 66 I'm guessing it will be some malfunction with the IL, which a "lock delete" kit available on this Forum will correct.

The only thing I'm worry about is how hot a .357 I can run with out damaging it

Except for the occasional 148 gr. Wadcutter rounds, I stick with the 158 gr. loadings for my .357 Magnum handguns. I reload the 158 gr. LSWC for plinking and target shooting, and the factory JSP for hunting.

Good luck,

Dave

I bet you are excited!

I'm not overly fond of 6"ers in how they look and they're a bit front heavy. But they shoot so well. I have a model 19 6"er. I would prefer something smaller and handier. But I can shoot it about as good as any handgun I've ever shot, even double action.

An identical 66-2 was my very first handgun, bought back in '89. I still have it.

I too worried about "durability with magnums", since after all those new L frames we're designed to deal with that.

I agree, if you stick with sensible loads with 158s (and I mean sensible, not necessarily light) you should be good for 1 or 2 million. I know I still am.

good shooting with your new purchase.
