I spent the day in Portland. My wife isn't extremely comfortable driving in a city, and she needed to be shuttled around. I was able to drop her off for a couple hours, and go to a couple of my favorite stores, one of which I had bought both my 629-4 and my 39. On the way there, I stopped in to a store I hadn't been in for years. Great selection, some beautiful old guns, but priced through the roof! By far the best deal I saw was a 14-3, in about 75-80%, for $800! It did have a box in rough shape, and an old police holster. (and a story about a cop owning it) He had a pretty decent supply of powder, at $50 a pound. I thought I was very fair, actually, the guy there at the moment (not the owner) was friendly, and the selection of classics were un-rivaled in Portland.

I read a few reviews before I wrote mine, and a couple were favorable. After I posted mine, I read a bunch more, and I felt better, because mine was one of the nicer ones!

I'll have to admit that if I was wealthy, and looking for a nice older firearm, I wouldn't bat an eye.

So has anyone else left a review of a gun store?

Can't say that I have. Did you ask if they were firm on their prices? We have to remember that if we like being able to check out gun shops, we need to support them. The big box stores are running them out of business.

Here in our little town of Salmon, ID we have three local shops that sell guns and fishing gear. The prices are actually pretty fair across the board. I'll give them my business before making an attempt to order on-line.

I can certainly understand that, but I'd find it necessary to inquire about every single item in the store!

My favorite gun store in Portland (Gun Broker on 82nd) has extremely decent prices, and a pretty good selection. They have prices that make you think they've already been slashed, and sometimes Royd, the owner, will come down even further. He's had a decent business there for years, with many, many repeat customers. I know, I've been one.

I didn't want anything in the other place bad enough to attempt a haggle. After reading more of the other reviews, I'm not sure that was even a possibility, anyway.

Portland LGS

A couple of years ago I was in Portland for a wedding, on Saturday I decided to visit a few gun shops, so I read some yelp reviews; one shop had consistent reviews: "this guy is old and cranky" "This guy is opinionated and stuck in the past" "this store is disorganized with stuff scattered everywhere".

I said to another member of our group "this is the one I want to go to"

It was great, just as advertised the guy was old (my age) had a parrot on his shoulder and a great selection of Smiths ,
revolvers and 3rd gens. The place was packed with rifles of every description and I didn't have time to see everything, the owner was very knowledgeable on 3rd gens (some places I go I just get blank stares when I ask for any 3rd gen Smiths).

When I got home I told my LGS "I met your brother in Portland, and he's as big a curmudgeon as you"
Jack laughed and took it as a compliment.
