I think I just bought a model 29-1

Would these be the right grips for this revolver?

No. It would have shipped with Cokes (upper right). Note the larger checkering area.

29-1 ?

My database has 71 29-1 guns listed as known survivors. Your number, S2271xx, is close to the top of the list! I would need to know the full serial number for your gun to be included in the database. Your gun was probably shipped sometime in 1962. I have 6 serial numbers in the database as 5" guns and 2 of which were cut from a 6 1/2" barrel!
We all are waiting for pics!

If it's a 5" great. But the barrel being ported would lead one to believe the barrel was probably cut at the same time. Regardless it's a cool gun that I'd love to own……. A 63 Vette with a crate engine is still a 63 Vette !

Photos as promised. Any information or advice is welcomed and appreciated. Barrel is 5" exactly but based on the wear on the muzzle I am assuming it was cut and cold blued.

If there are more things I should photograph let me know.

When I bought this I was planning on grabbing a set of target grips and looking into swapping the barrel to a 6.5".

Now I understand how it is you could have paid next to nothing for it... Someone clearly hacked the poor old girl up.

The barrel was most certainly cut as barrels were never offered in 5" nor were they ever factory ported.

That being said, it was still a good buy, I wouldn't have hesitated either.

Personally, I'd just leave it in its current configuration and treat her as a shooter. After all she's been through, the poor old girl deserves a new pair of shoes, then to be taken out and shown a good time.

In addition to the barrel work the grip frame was rounded, not square like it should be, as well as partially obliterating the serial number on the butt-uh oh. Obviously it shows being made into what the prior owner wanted without a concern for any future value.

Other than the barrel work and the missing factory grips… it's got some finish wear, heavy around the grip frame. But the action and lock up are tight and the trigger is buttery smooth. Someone loved this gun a lot. I bought it with the intention of filling the m29 hole in my gun safe. I've had several pre-29s and 29-2s all with box's and papers but I never would shoot them because they were too nice.

I didn't even process that change when I looked it over. Obvious now that it's been pointed out. Will regular target grips still work on it?

You could get a special order 5" during this time. Everything looks centered up to me. The color is off from the frame, but looks like the cylinder and barrel have the original factory bluing and the frame was reblued more of a black color after the round butt job.

Sometimes the owner just doesn't know how rare the gun is...work looks like it was done in the 80s or 90s, long before sources like this forum were around helping educate people :D

I probably would have bought it too after I finished crying over it. :(;)
Me too...I still moon over a missed opportunity on a 29-2 earlier this year...It was well executed, but I passed on it simply because it didn't fit the direction in which my accumulation has been moving...It would have made a neat conversation piece/carry gun anyway...Maybe I'll see it again...;)...Ben

Oh, good golly! That barrel has been butchered with shortening and two very different styles of porting. That could be fixed with a replacement barrel, but the grip frame has also been milled to make it a round butt configuration. Sad, but this 29-1 is a shooter grade item. Worth more than a 29 or 29-2 with similar modifications? Maybe, but it's worth a fraction of what it would be if it was not modified. It is unfortunate, but I'm sure when the previous owner was "customizing" it, he had no idea how rare the Model 29-1 was nor how valuable it was as an original piece.

If, and that's a big if, as Doc44 mentions, the grip is to standard round butt dimensions Hogue for one company makes very nice round to square conversion grips, I put one on my 625-3, as he stated it'll be necessary to find a custom maker. Good luck in your journey with this revolver and hopefully it's a fine shooter you can enjoy for many years.
