Actually I don't think that was too bad a buy if that is the gun you wanted. List price new is close to a grand, mags run $32+ea.

TSW's generally bring a higher price and the 4013 seems to be getting rare on these auction sites. Add in the 5 magazines and the fact that it probably wasn't a police trade in, I would say it was reasonably priced. I don't think I would have bid over say $450 for it, but that's me. It has to be a GREAT deal for me to bid on a gun auction.

i just bought a 4043 with box manual & 3 mags for $380.00 shipped. i will pick it up tuesday. then i found 4 x 11 round mags on GB for $41.00 shipped.

i didn't think a 4013 would be $200.00 more.

There are a lot more 4043's on the market than there are 4013's. Not to mention that the compact Smiths have a much stronger following. Even on the gun forums where they bash S&W, you will always read people's posts about how wonderful the 3913/4013 series guns are. There's only one 4013TSW for sale on GunsAmerica and they want $625. It's all about supply and demand.

Still makes me wonder why Smith did not come out with a budget compact .40 like the 908/457 series.

Yeah, well I fail to understand S&W's thinking at all. The CS9, CS40, 3913/3953 and 4013 are proven designs at precisely the sweet spot in the burgeoning concealed-carry market. The CS9 is about the same size as the little Kahrs, and has a much better reputation for durability.

The obvious thing to do? Stop making them for civilian sales, of course. [Shakes head.]

thanx for the heads-up. however, i'm not in the market for a 4013 just yet. i will pick up 3 guns tuesday at my FFL, & i have 2 more on layaway i need to finish before i buy anything else.

besides 3913 & 4013, waht are the other pistols in that series?

In .40S&W there is the CS40, CS40D, 4013, 4014, 4053, 4054 & 4040PD.

And there is actually two different 4053's, one in single stack and one in double stack.

In 9mm there is the CS9, CS9D, 908, 3913, 3913LS, 3913NL, 3914, 3914LS, 3914NL, 3953 & 3954.

And I am probably missing a model or two.

No problem. S&W definitely got caught up in the "a model for everyone" mentality in the late 80's and 90's. Then to make things worse they became a little inconsistent with their numbering system. Just the same, I still like 'em!

My experience in finding a third generation Smith in California is the price is $450.00 to $600.00. I just bought a nice 5903 for $543.00 out the door. So the price on gun broker wasn't too bad.
