Some can still walk; others use canes or walkers. Some have to use wheelchairs. They are the last remnants of the Greatest Generation who served in World War II. Their average age is 93. To me, they are all giants who helped to defeat tyranny. They changed the world in the process.

Last week I was privileged to accompany one of them to go to Washington DC to see the memorial dedicated to their service. Some of you wrote letters to him to open on the return flight home. Dick Plowden was an Army Air Corps lieutenant who flew P-47s in ground support missions against the Germans over the Rhine river. He once had to bail out when his plane, crippled by flak, could no longer fly. His face was severely cut in the process by the shards from his shattered canopy. He received the Purple Heart in the process.

Please do go to Honor Flight Arizona: Flying Arizona veterans to see the Veteran Memorials in Washington to learn about the wonderful job this dedicated organization is doing. They fly WWII vets to DC to see the war memorials, with emphasis on the WWII memorial completed in 2004. There is no charge to the vets for the trip; guardians (such as me) pay our own way. Sadly, 75% of the WWII vets have passed and will never see the memorial. Honor Flight is determined to fly all of the remaining vets to see the lately-built memorial dedicated to them.

I took many pictures on the trip – here are a few of them:

Dick Plowden in the Phoenix airport prior to the trip:

Here's Dick on the Southwest Airlines flight to St. Louis, our stopover on the way to Baltimore, with some great flight attendants:

…and Dick got a nice reward for his service:

Here's a group shot of the vets who took this trip at the WWII memorial:

Here's a pic of the interior of the memorial – way too big to get into one picture:

The memorial is in close proximity to the Washington monument, seen here:

Here's Dick and me, posing for posterity:

Dick is next to a quote by Harry Truman at the memorial:

We made a stop at Arlington to view the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns:

The flag at Arlington is lowered each evening with great reverence:

I made a point of visiting the Vietnam Wall to make a rubbing of the name of a good friend I lost in that war - Ed Cribb. A true hero.

Dick was delighted to see the Air Force memorial – he was a colonel in the AF reserves after the war:

A highlight of the trip was a visit to Fort McHenry, where Francis Scott Key wrote the words to the Star Spangled banner. Amazingly, the fort is still intact and mostly original.

Here's Dick receiving tons of letters at mail call on the return trip. Thanks to everyone who wrote!

Home at last. An exhausting but unforgettable journey for these wonderful vets, and for me as well.

Paladin,
Thank you so much for sharing what must have been an inspiring experience.

Here is a video of another group of Vets going to the WWII Museum in New Orleans.
It's worth watching, in fact it should be mandatory.

I am proud to have my oldest cousin as one of these fine members of the Greatest Generation. He flew with the Army Air Crops out of North Africa and after the war made a career in the USAF, retired as a full Colonel.

Got to see him a couple of weeks ago at a gathering of some shirt tail relations. 95 and just the past year gave up golf and had to start using a cane but otherwise in good health. God bless all the veterans!

I detract not one whit from the vets of WWII, my father, and four uncles were all in service at that time, they all did their parts. BUT, I ask [humbly,if you please] that you remember our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and women in uniform of all services since the great generation that fought and won WWII. They had no more to give than their lives or any less to give than the WWII vets. I submit to you that ALL generations of American Armed Forces are Great generations, you pick who you think was the Greatest. All troops ,of any branch, from the Revolution to the present, have written that check that says ," I pledge my life to the United States Of America". I don't detract from them when I say everyone in uniform that served in combat offered the same dedication and determination.
I believe that all American Troops have offered up the same blood, determination, and sense of purpose that all have offered up since the birth of our country. So, The greatest Generation or all generations? Nick

I lost my personal connection to WWII and the Greatest Generation on January 14th, 2015. Pop was a veteran of No. Africa, Italy, Corsica, France and Belgium. He gave 33 months of his youth in these foreign lands that we might live in peace. I believe he came home a changed, but better man for having endured the ordeal.

He's at peace now and next to the wife he never stopped loving 10 years after her passing. I hope they have both returned to those pre-war years when they met and fell in love.

My former boss of over 30 years and one of my high school teachers were WW2 vets and fortunately were able to utilize Honor Flight's services several years ago. I know it was a very special time for them. I'm partly disabled and thus can't accompany any of these fellows, but if things were different I would surely like to do so.

Thanks for the post and pictures, John.

My time in Iraq and Afghanistan wouldn't make a pimple on those
Men and Women's ***'s. WE WILL NEVER AGAIN SEE THAT LEVEL OF SACRIFICE IN THIS COUNTRY.
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SERVE THIS MAGNIFICENT COUNTRY. I'M FOREVER IN DEBT TO THOSE WHO SERVED BEFORE ME.

Thank you so much for this post. It was hard to keep a dry
eye as I read it, though I didn't try to.

My Dad was a Marine in 1944-45 on Guam and Iwo Jima.
He never got to go to see the memorial. Sadly I lost him last
November just one month short of his 89th birthday. He was
a great man and a wonderful father.

The Greatest Generation was a special breed who saved the
world as we know it.

That is not to detract from the men and women who served
since, and who are now actively serving. Your dedication to
defending our country is thankless.

THANK YOU ALL FOR MY FREEDOM.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Stu
