Today after work I stopped by a LGS to see what they might have gotten in on trade. Sitting under the glass was an absolutely beautiful 8-inch 29-5 with target stocks; $1200, firm. While I suppose that's a fair price these days it didn't seem like enough of a bargain that I could justify putting down a layaway deposit, unfortunately.
Still, it was an amazing piece. :(

If I had $1200.00 and saw that gun, She'd of went home with me!! I had a M-29 8,3/8" barrel and that was the Best shooting pistol I've owned!! Using 240gr OTC ammo, She would throw a fist sized pattern at 50 yards + with less than a 3" barrel rise and a Very smooth kick!!

The barrel length is what made mine a great shooter I believe! ;) :D

IMHO ya missed out on a Great one!!!

OK, so what is a bargain, 1100? Smith was supposed to be on the top of their game when they made the 29-5. A steal would be 1000? So what are we really talking about here 100.00?

If it is in the condition you say it is, 100 dollars would not be a consideration. You did not mention box etc.

Just my .02:D

The -5 version should be a great Model 29. With the engineering changes it should hold up pretty well in actual magnum usage, and it still has the forged parts and square-butt frame many of us like. I've only seen a few -5s, and never owned one, so that's just me theorizing. A few years ago I did see a decent 6-incher that tempted me, but the price was out of line with the finish condition. (It had spent some time in a holster.) I hate to say it but I might have talked myself into buying that one for $1200 if it had caught me in a weak moment. As everyone likes to say, "They're not making those anymore." :o

I might have considered it had I not already committed to a 64 NY-1 snubbie recently. Just don't think I can swing them both.

I'm with Roscoe, I would have taken that home. Well, ok, not this month, we're in the midst of a total kitchen remodel...$$$

I think the days of a "bargain" on a sought after gun are behind us. I keep pretty close tabs on realized online prices and I'm currently showing a median for a 29–anything of $1,800. 4-screws are $2,285, and 5-screws have a median of $2,795! We can shake our heads and accuse people of having more money than sense all we want, but that's the market reality.

TODAY's Bargains will be realized next year when the price is 15% higher. Today, I cannot afford the guns I bought 4 years ago because of recent price increases.

Is it time to sell?

I fear that you are correct. So far, inflation has not leveled off nor is there much realistic expectation of inflation leveling off and certainly no expectation that prices will ever return to those of 2020 or prior years. Today's fair price may well be considered a bargain or good investment by next year.

Always wanted a nice model 29 and 24, but the used market has gone crazy, and frankly I don't have that kind of money.

I have been stocking up on the new "poor mans" revolvers;
Anacondas and Pythons.

Thank God they are local…grab it before someone else does.

Where do you draw the line? Need has nothing to do with it. You never pay to much but maybe to soon. It's an individual decision and one I combat regularly. Sometimes I win sometimes I don't.

Here is my 29-5 Classic DX 5". Made 1992 for 1 year, Near as I can determine about 200 made. Came with Hogue rubber, and Morado combats. The grips are Culina American Holly
