Any ideas as to what this gun is? I have to drive two hours to see it first hand and would like to know what I am getting into before I do that. The owner has no clue and so far has not passed along what caliber it is. On the cylinder yoke where the model is normally or more recently I should say it has R88803. Any help is appreciated.

The serial number is on the butt of the grip frame. You will need to remove the grips to see the number. From the pictures, it appears to be about 38 caliber so it may be a K38 Masterpiece (Pre Model 14). Since it does not have the 5 screw frame it is later than 1955 and the model marking started in 1957 so it is likely between these dates.

Hope this helps.

Maybe a Model 14 38 spl. 6 inch. Also known as the K38. Great guns and they are extremely accurate.

Thanks alot for the help. I feel much better about the trip now.
That is about the only model I did not look up.

Yep, model 14. .38 Special, TH, TT, Patridge front sight, 6" non-tapered barrel, gorgeous walnut target diamond grips. What a treasure! I'm in Bryan too, let me know if you want to go shoot it. 148 grain wadcutters will test your shooting skills in that Smith.

Now that I have the gun in had I have been able to figure it out.

Serial number is K293115, I truly believe this was the first time the grips have been taken off.

It is a Model 14 K-38 Target Masterpiece, created in 1957 before S&W started stamping model number.

Thanks again for the input.
