I'd Sure Like To Have THAT S&W Back

Long ago I wanted to trade my S&W Model 19 6 inch for a S&W Model 66 with the same barrel length, since I like shiny stuff.
Problem is it got lost in shipment, so the LGS owner gave me as replacement a S&W Model 27 8 3/8 in nickel, presentation case, still have it.
Sure do miss not having the Model 19 in the collection.

I have two…if you include stolen guns

The first is a Model 36 that belonged to my Dad. I remember shooting it when I was about 5 and he was assigned to Kanoehe MCAS. When we left, everything got shipped back home to Miami. The Chiefs Special never showed up. They did an investigation and everything, but it never turned up.

Second is a Model 19-3 that I bought when I returned to Florida after my military service. It was the first handgun I had ever purchased without Dad along. About three years after I bought it, my first daughter was born and my fairly liberal first wife was freaked out about a gun in the house with a child, even though she was an infant. I capitulated and sold it to a good friend with the agreement that I could get it back at some point in the future. We both worked at the mouse house in Orlando and they had a pretty dim view of employees with guns in vehicles. It was stolen and of course he was a little hesitant to report it to security and lose his job. I couldn't blame him and certainly didn't want him to get fired.

Somewhere, I may have serial numbers of them on some old receipts or something, but as of yet I've come up empty.:(

This one...4" 657

I had a 6" 686-5. Only had one box through it.
Traded it in for a Glock 19.
It's been 25 years but I still don't know why I did that.

Well there's quite a few because I sold off a collection in the early 90's that would make you sick if I listed them all and it's too early for me to start drinking.

But it would have to be the one that I can't remember exactly what they called it. .44 Hand Ejector 3rd Model or something. .44 Military? Pre-model numbers 4" fixed sights .44 Special. It was the unfortunate recipient of a re-blue but it looked great. No pitting. Not sure why it was reblued.

I've sold three S&W's over the years. My first and second purchases, same day, transferred 10-6 heavy barrel to my mother in 1974, got it back after her passing in 1998.
My 15- Combat Masterpiece, sold it in '76 (and a motorcycle I had since '68 and a car I had since '70) at the behest of an ex-fiancée. Could not get any of those back, car was impounded and probably scrapped, motorcycle, I traced it (1982) but never got a reply to the letter I mailed. Combat Masterpiece, who knows where? I have replaced all three with kinda similar items, found a CM about a year and a half ago at work one day.
M&P, Fourth Change 1905,my third S&W. Traded it to a friend towards a Harley with the agreement that I had first dibs if he sold it. He passed away late 1996. His widow gave it to me for helping her with selling off his two collector cars and tools though it was a lousy way to reacquire it.
Haven't sold any others off since.

The one that I miss most is the S&W model 28-2 with 4" barrel that my wife bought for me as a present when I graduated from college. I had it brush hard chromed. I carried it daily for a few years and traded it off for a Hi Standard Victor.

And she let you live after that? Or does she still bring it up every time she gets mad at you?

Only one I regret and remember is a Model 58. It was the first 41 magnum I ever saw. I was with my old man when he was still alive. Few years later I went with him and bought it as it had never changed owners for $400. I traded it to a couple of S&W autos plus boot, did really well but I still regret it. Good news is that it was taken care of and appreciated where it went (I kept track of it and tried to get it back). It eventually was given to the man's son for a police graduation gift....I wish I had that one back. :(

Had a Lew Horton Model 24 3" in the blue. Only 5000 made. Sold it for twice what I paid for it 5 years after I got it and thought I made a good deal. Still miss that big hunk 20 years later.
Also, only kinda regret it, was a Mod 36 in great condition I was last weekend. Since it was 700+ I seesawed around it, and still am thinking about it. Wound up trading a SP101 3" for A new 60 3" plus a couple bucks. Still thinking about the 36.....if it's even there. I'll get over it though.

Wasn't "collecting" or 'accumulating" in the late 80s early 90s. I had a 4" 686 round butt and a 3" 66. So traded off my 2 1/2" and 4" 19s.

Around 9/11ish decided I'd like to find "nice" P&Red 2 1/2 and 4" 19s to replace the ones I'd let go 10-15 years earlier. IIRC took me 5 years to acquire those two models in the condition I wanted locally!

A 3" 13 I carried off-duty. Sold it to a friend in 1981 and he still has it. It is not for sale.

My first service pistol-a 4" 64-3 S/N 30D1224.
A few years after being sworn in, I was able to transfer to my department's FTS, where I was also issued a Model 67. Upon leaving the FTS for another assignment, I was able to keep only one gun- I chose the 67. Don't get me wrong, the 67 was a great choice but as time went on I regretted giving up the 64.
ladder13, a good friend and great all around guy, was able to sell me a 64-3 S/N 30D1178 (which by serial number was close!) but…
If anyone comes across my old 64 (it's got a factory installed red ramp front sight) I'm in the market.

Like others have mentioned, in my younger days it was gotta sell one to buy one. However, since then, most of the ones I've sold and regretted have been replaced by the same model in better condition. ;)
The one gun that haunts me is not one I had, but rather one I passed on buying. Many years ago when I was still new to S&Ws, I was at a gun show and could have bought a NIB Model 520 for $400. I thought long and hard about it but passed as I wanted adjustable sights. Some time later, I discovered what it actually was and I've been kicking myself ever since.
