Hello everybody,

I own an old S&W mod. 3, serial 3685. On the stock bottom there is "US" marking printed.
Wondering production year...

Also, there are no "Schofield's" markings...
So I am wondering if this is a genuine old S&W revolver or a copy coming from another country.

Thanks for your help!

Tony

Is the latch on the frame or on the top strap? I assume you have identified your revolver as a Schofield, but there were some US marked 44 Americans as well.

Hi There,

Welcome to Our Group!

A picture is worth a 1000 words. Do you think you could post
some pics of your revolver? The serial number is in the correct
range for a second model Schofield but there were many bogus
European copies made.

Cheers!
Webb

The Model 3 First Model American had an address and patent dates on the top barrel rib. Clues would be a picture of the top rib stamping showing patent dates. Both the Model 3 First Model in 44 American caliber and the Model 3 Russian First Model in 44 Russian caliber started their production with serial number "1" so there are two similar models with your serial number. Top rib identification will help with knowing what you have.

The 1st model Russian domestic production was numbered with the American Models.
The Russian contract production was numbered in it's own series IIRC

Hi There,

I have a US marked model 3 belonging to my ggg grandfather. It is only marked US on top of barrel. It is serial number 1686.

This revolver deserves closer scrutiny. Serial # 1686 is one of
the #3 Americans purchased by the U.S. Army and accepted in
Jan. 1871. Close-up pics would be necessary to look for inspec-
tor marks.

Cheers!

adtesti,

By what I see...You most definitely have a 2nd Model Schofield!! The Schofield Patent Markings you referred to as missing are on the Right Side of the Barrel on the Extractor Housing...Hope this helps!!

Edit to add: (Thanks to wlw-19958)...After fully downloading the Right Barrel Photo I see now the Schofield Patent Rollmark is missing...Sorry about that!!

Hi There,

No question, it is a second model Schofield. It is strange the
Schofield patent marks were scrubbed off. I wonder if this one
was Wells Fargo marked and someone wanted to remove that.

Cheers!

Webb,

Good Eye...Missed that at first glance before I fully downloaded all the Photos...I could clearly see S&W Address & Patent Dates on the Left Side, but couldn't make out the Right Side until it fully loaded!! I have since edited my Earlier Post to clarify that...Thanks!!

Thanks indeed y’all guys.
So I own an original 2nd model Schofield if I have well understood.
Now, it is also a military gun, since it has “US” printed on the butt’s bottom - I suppose.
Last…any kind of apx value for my gun? Barrel inside has a good definition as well.
Best and thanks
Tony
