I am thinking of buying a Mod. 13-1 black with black rubber grips 4 inch barrel hand ejector 6 shot ser. no. 9k92078 and 3 screws.
May have been owned by a former Calif. policeman. seems in very good condition. Curious as to age and value. Thanks for any help. Chris in Oregon

The 13-1 was produced from 1974-1977. It was made for military/police. In 1977 S&W introduced the 13-2 when they changed the gas ring back to the cylinder. Value = $350-$550 depending on condition.

Either not a 13-1 or not the right serial -- that number's for an adjustable sight K-frame; 13s are fixed sight.

First of all, Welcome to the Forum

That serial number would be from 1976.

However as Hapworth mentions, most K prefixed serial numbers are target frames.

A 1976 model 13 with an engineering revision of -1 should be a D prefixed serial number.

If all of the information you have given us is correct, most likely you are looking at a revolver with an incorrect model number stamped into it. This is a fairly common occurrence.

If it has adjustable sights, it could be a mis-stamped model 19

A picture or two might help clear up some of this.

S&W mod 13-1

The S&W does have an adjustable sight. The butt serial # matches the # in the area of the Mod. #. Do the black rubber grips that cover the butt ser. # indicate a police pistol?

A Pic would help. Rubber grips are not original. If the finish is black instead of std blue then it has probably been refinished as well. Plus the adjustable sight would probably make it a model 19 as others have said.
