I've been a member for about ten years but don't post often. The only S&W that I own is an antique top break that I recovered from Lake Dora in Florida. While scuba diving for relics during the 80's.

My question is, how do you identify which frame a gun has? What are the identifiers for a K, L, N, frame.

I have several sets of grips that I'm trying to match up to frames, for eventual sale.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Photos of the stocks in question would really help.

The K and L grip frames have the same dimensions and the N is larger. The former are 1 3/4" long at the bottom edge and N frame 1 7/8".

This might help a bit...

Regardless of grip style (Target, Magna, etc.), the inside rear ledge of the grip that fits into the round part of the frame is dramatically different from the K/L grips versus the N frame grips.

I thought I had a pic showing dimensions, if I can find that I'll post it also. Regardless, this pic might help sort out the grips.

If the gun is truly an antique top break (pre-1899,I believe) it would predate any of the frame sizes mentioned. Can you post a picture or three to help identify it?

I probably posted this in incorrect spot. Question is not in regards to the antique I found, it is to help me identify some stocks that I have. How do I post pics to this thread?

If you scroll down below the box where you are typing your post in the second box to appear is one marked MANAGE ATTACHMENTS. Click that and another box appears that says:CHOOSE FILE. Click that and it takes you to your stored photos. Find the photo that you wish to add and click OPEN. Once a photo is chosen you are brought back to the box that says CHOOSE FILE and there is a box to the right that says UPLOAD. That takes the file from your computer and places it in your post. You can repeat that process up to 5 times per post IIRC. If you wish to add more photos then you merely start a second post.

The only issue is if your photos exceed the size limit allowed. In that case you need to resize the photos on you computer prior to uploading and that's a whole new lesson.

Grip ID

Reverse side of last grip that was pictured in my initial post. Thanks to JSR III for help in posting pics.
