I bought this pre 10 for the grips which are not original to the gun. Well, I came across a couple Target Hand Ejectors from the 1920's with mirror bores that have serious cosmetic problems that I would like to send to Turnbull.

Anyway, I'd like to utilize these grips. Can anyone tell me the exact years these were used?

Much thanks,

The grips shown are from the 1930s and are fairly desirable in that condition. You could probably get a good price for them. Not many guns were made during the Depression, and that means a lot fewer pairs of grips were made also. Correct 1920s round top grips have no medallions. Last I heard, Turnbull would not touch a S&W, but that may have changed.

Interesting thread. I believe my pre 10 dates to 1952. I just have a hard time believing those are original. I posted a thread a couple years ago when I bought this gun. I had numerous PM's from members here wanting to buy these grips. One guy offered me $400. Despite being just a blue collar guy, it just made me want to keep them more thinking they are rare. Just curious of the attraction.

I just purchased some sharp shouldered diamond Magna's which I think is correct for the above pre 10.

I have a deal in the works for a crappy looking Hand Ejector in 32-20 with 4" barrel missing the grips. Guessing the years would be mid 1920's. Was hoping these (rare) grips would look neat after getting in refinished.

K-frame square butt, standard silver medallion, service grips, Pre-War approx. 1930-WWII. They still made thousands of M&P's and the grips are easily available online, generally between $60-100. As DWalt said, 1920s era stocks would have no medallions just checkered wood in the same shape.

In my opinion, this style of stocks/grips is not rare. However, the condition of yours is scarce as they are harder to find. Rare grips would be pre-war large medallion K-frame Magnas...or service stocks in that condition.

DWalt,

Turnbull restored a Fox SxS 20 ga for a friend of mine that looks like it was just made in 1930. I just assumed he would do anything vintage. I know he is pricey but for the quality of work and turn around time, I thought he would be the way to go. Not liking the nearly 2 year wait from Fords.

If there is a stamped number on the inside right stock panel, I'd guess it will be in the 600,000 range or higher. A .38 M & P from 1952 would be in the low 200,000s (as I'm sure you see on the gun :)). If there is no number stamped on them, they are probably 1930s era replacements. This might settle if they are original.

I guess I'm not that great of detective. I should have looked at the serial number on the grips.

Anyway, the gun is C 169XXX and the grips are 588XXX. Experts please chime in.
