IDPA - what revolver are you shooting?

Roadrunner, nice wall of goodies that you've collected. I've got a few on my wall here, but it's been a long time since I've been in competition. Gonna change that this year as time allows.

I would love to give the 625 a run.... just to see if my smallish hands could handle it. I love the idea of the .45acp and the moon clips. Great combo.

Any rate, thanks for the info and might run across you sometime. I'll be watching for you in the videos from the Indoor at S&W. :-)

I started with a 4" 10-5. I now use a model 65-3 4" with packmeyer grippers on it. I use the comp 3's also, I was using the safariland holder but that was illegal. My holster is homemade ( cant find a left handed 4" k frame one anywhere in kydex) Now using the blade tech holder not as user friendly but legal. I have been loading 158 gr swc over 4 gr bullseye, just to knock down the steel.

Jeb, just saw a Md. 15 at local gun shop. It's been parkerized and the hammer is bobbed, but has nice trigger pull. Not a collectors piece by any means, but might make a good IDPA gun.

I think it will. K frames are fast in hand and those adjustible sights are easier to see when the clock is ticking. My model 15 was a range gun for the Sherrif's department so it had a hard earned trigger job. She is not a beauty but I love her all the same.

I shoot in our Club Defensive Pistol match every month. We shoot Outlaw IDPA one month, and Steel Challenge the next.
We only have a single revolver Division SSR, for all revolvers.

My main gun is a S&W 64-3. It has been worked on by Ron Power at Power Custom. Ball Loc, Chamfered Chambers, etc.
I have Green Sight Brite sight paint on the front sight.

Holster Lobo Enhanced Pancake w/Inner Hammer Shield.

Speed Loaders: Safariland Comp III

Speed Loader Holders: North Mountain IDPA Compliant

Current Load: 4.7 Unique under a 158 Round Nose with Federal primers. Next time I start the 550 up the charge will be 5.0 Unique.

My second most used handgun would be my 4" 610 No Dash Power Custom Combat.

Holster: Lobo Enhanced Pancake w/Inner Hammer Shield

Moon Clip Holders: California Competition 7 shot 357

Moon Clips: Ranch Products

Ammo: 40 S&W nickel cases with a 140 Round Nose while they last. I believe they are 38-40 bullets for cowboy action.
I will probably go back to Lee 175 Truncated when the 140 run out. Using Clays for powder.

I also shoot my 3" 625 Power Custom Combat some. Along with the other custom work, It has been converted to a full length ejector rod for reliable extraction.

Holster: Lobo Model 1 Pancake
Moon Clip Holders: California Competition
Moon Clips: Ranch Products

My little brother is shooting a 3" Willy Clapp GP100 Tuned my Ron Power "Power Custom". It is the slickest GP100 I have ever handled.

Holster: Lobo Enhanced Pancake w/Inner Hammer Shield
Speed Loaders: Safariland Comp III

I shoot my 4" 627 in ESR ... moonclipped ... it's an 8 shooter, I have to retain any moonclips that have unfired cartridges. This is an excellent excuse for slower times.

FYI IDPA does not allow revolvers to load beyond 6 rounds.

IDPA--Revolvers

SSP.....I started out with a 3" 66-4 DAO Bobb Hammer....Now I mostly use a 3" or 4" 13-2 DAO Bobb Hammer and HKS speed loaders...(Old School)

ESP....A 581 NO-Dash....HKS speed loaders (158gr. loads running around 1050 fps.)...And a 625-3 4"

This is all great information everyone. I'm thinking of finally getting involved in IDPA this year and using my stock 66 with a 2 1/2" barrel. I use HKS speedloaders. Can anyone recommend an IDPA compliant hks speedloader holder? Any snub K-frame competitors - what holsters are you using?

The two best loader holders are Ready Tactical or North Mountain (IDPA compliant). No idea if they work with HKS loaders. Email North Mountain; their customer service is top notch.

The two best speedloaders are Safariland Comp III or Jetloaders.

Of course, feel free to use the HKS.

IDPA Revolver

I make the classic mistake of not using the same gun for each match, because I have several revolvers I like to shoot.

But the one I shoot most often is a Model 65 3" barrel. I probably score just as well with it as with a 4" barrel Model 15.

Sometimes I'll shoot a 2" revolver - a Model 15 or a Model 10.

That's the problem for me - too many nice guns to choose from!

But I think the best overall for me is the 3" Model 65.

Tomorrow, if the wind dies down enough for the match to be held, I will be shooting a 10-6, 4" HB that I purchased from a member of this forum.
It is a USPSA match.

Years ago, shot an IPSC match with a 2" Model 36.

Use either a M66 4" or M66 2.5" with HKS speedloaders and HKS pouches. Ammo is a 158 RNL with 5.0 grains of Unique. Using a Kramer or DeSantis holster and having fun.

I used to use my 5" 625 before they changed the rules to 4" max. Now its one of several depending on what I feel like playing with on any particular day. It might be a 4" 586 out of a Kydex holster if I'm trying to be competitive, a 4" Model 10 out of a leather OWB because I like the back to basics aspect, a 3" Model 13 out of a leather IWB because it is one of the more truly practical carry guns that I own, and I've even shot matches with a 4" 629 out of either an IWB or a thumbreak OWB loaded with the Skeeter load and HKS speedloaders to get trigger time with a great woods gun. I don't feel poorly equipped with any of them!

I started shooting IDPA with a 2.5" 66 because that is what I had. I later picked up a model 10 4" but my old eyes had trouble with that little fixed sight.

I bought a 686 and when it went to S&W for warranty work, I had them do the slick up on it. I also added a Fiber Optic front sight. I liked the 686 and it is a good gun but I got a deal on a 4" 66-2 so I sent it off to a guy that does S&W work and had the full treatment done to it. I added the Weigand front sight base so I can change front sights but I use the black patridge front mostly.

I use a Kydex Holster and Ready Tactical holders with slightly cut down jet loaders.

Shot my first IDPA match with a Model 325 Thunder Ranch tonight. I put factory round butt wood grips on it tonight (conceals better). Carried it in a Galco Summer Comfort IWB holster (because that's how I carry daily). Used plane jane moon clips in an Uncle Mike's double speed loader pouch.

Interesting rig...wish I could provide more feedback, but I'm a rookie at this, so most of the issues were probably operator-caused. ;)

I shoot in ESR with a S&W 646 in an Alabama Kydex holster. Fed AE 165 gr. I use Hogue rubber grips for competition - the ones in the picture are for BBQ purposes.

Adios,

I'm getting an Alabama rig made as we speak! How do you like the holster?

It's a terrific holster. Well made, perfect fit, great retention, but a smooth draw. Only thing I'd change would be the belt loop. Wish it were split so it would straddle a belt keeper and be on my true body centerline (3 o'clock). With the solid belt loop, it has to go behind the centerline keeper at about 3:30. Minor detail. Here it is...
