If not a Bodyguard 380 then What?

I like pocket guns and I've had a whole bunch of em'. I've owned about 10 J-frames and they are not pocket guns to me because I'm talking about blue jeans which is what I wear 99% of time. I wear regular fit, boot cut jeans and the small .380s or .25s are the only thing that work, some guys wear the big baggy jeans and a Glock 19 or .45 Commander is a pocket gun to them, but not me. I've had 2 Kel-tecs, 3 Taurus, and 3 LCPs and the new LCPII is the best of the bunch. It has great sights, a great trigger, and a comfortable grip but the best thing is the recoil because it isn't annoying to shoot 50 or 100 rounds through it. It's actually fun!

All I can say at this point is that "supposedly" S&W is in the process of introducing a "new" 380 and rumor has it ..... it will have a better trigger, better sights, new striker system but no one as yet is willing to let the cat out of the bag for real....all insider rumor and innuendo at this point.

I am going to wait and hope the rumor is true....have no interest in the current model BG380. If I had to have a 380 today it would be a LCP-2 but I really want a BG380 without problems so I will wait and hope......

I too suggest a j-frame, but first check out the Bersa Thunder 380.
It looks like a Walther PPK, but less that $300. Bersa owners rave over them.
I carry a m&p shield 9 mm with night sights bought a body guard 380 with laser sights for the wife nice little gun I also carry a 642 just bought a Bersa CC 380 to leave in my truck got it at good price bought it used really shoots good had karn9mm cw9 but didn't like it just hard to beat S&W

BG 380

I am new at the shooting again and got the BG 380 to try as back up. Got a good price on it and S&W gave me back $50. Was fun to shoot till the front sight fell in the trash. Found out this was common thing. But S&W replaced the sight on their dime. Now it shoots great. Still learning that and others

I took the Kentucky concealed carry course on Saturday. It was given by the sheriff's department here and there were 40 people in the class.

I had a 642 with a full size Hogue grip and everyone else had sliders and cannons.

The first thing the Instructor did was ask why everyone was bringing sliders and large guns to a concealed carry class.

He walked over to me and picked my 642 up and took it to the front of the class and told them that the 642 was what they all should be carrying and they all needed to try to trade in what they had for a 642.

He then put his foot on a table and pulled a 642 out of his ankle holster. He told them if they wanted it in black to get a 442. He said that was what the sheriff department here uses for a bug.

When we went to the range for our firing test my 642 did a great job at 25 feet.

I will be receiving a concealed carry permit from the state of Kentucky.

There were 12 women in the class and they looked like they were from the ages of 20s to 60s.

He pulled out a loaded gun in a class!?:eek::eek:

IMHO, the biggest issue with the BG380 is that folks expect it to be a well behaved range gun. (Getting one with a laser seems to double those expectations.)
Admittedly, the BG380 sucks as a range gun. The same attributes ( weight, size, thinness, long DA pull...) that make it an awsome pocket carry, make it hard to shoot (well) when shooting at targets past 20'.

As for me, I carried through the 80's and 90's when we would have paid HUGE dividends to have a carry option that light, compact, safe and reliable. I like my BG for what it is and accept it's limitations. IMHO, it is ideal for it's intended purpose.

Might I suggest an LCR .38 +P as an alternative for pocket carry/IWB/OWB. Super gun.

I have an original LCP (gen 1) that I've modified somewhat (installed proper sights, cerokote finish, Handall grip) and through which I've put over 1500 rounds since 2009.

Beside springs and a guide rod replacement, it's been flawless. Not one failure to feed, fire, or eject. No cracks, no rust. Looks like new.

I carry with XTP Federals. Ballistics tests for this round (and the Fiocchi Extrema) are excellent in terms of proper penetration and expansion.

What's not to like?

I have Walthers, too expensive for pocket carry around the farm. I like my Ruger Custom LCP .380. When I leave I always carry a .45.

Guys, the OP posted almost 5 1/2 years ago, got a model 640 Pro in late 2014 (to replace his BG .380?) and hasn't been here in 5 months. Hopefully he'll catch up with your comments upon his return :)

LOL..usually I notice the dates but missed it on this one.

Yep...that being said the person who dug up the 5 year old posting - RedPointGS - must have had a clue he was in the ancient area!!

The M&P380 is NOT a striker fired gun

I know that,I was talking about the ones like the G42 and other striker fired pistols he was asking about for a replacement.I also don't like a cocked and lock for pocket carry. I have a Sig 238 that I don't like as a pocket carry.I for one have a BG.380 with over 1500 round thru her that I carry everyday without any problems:):)It took me ten years to replace my old J-frame.

Garddogg56

DOH! Sorry Garddogg56, I just saw your post above, my bad. Maybe someone else will want to check out the Wiki anyway though~

Just a quick note partner, this is from Wikipedia about the BG 380, "Unlike the rest of the M&P pistols, the M&P Bodyguard is not striker fired. It is a traditional double action only hammer fired pistol."

Here's the link: Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 - Wikipedia

Safe shooting, ya'll~

I do not want a striker fire pistol for pocket carry!!!!!.
