I am curious to see which j frame you guys would pick to be your best carry/personal protection/range J frame if you could only have 1. It could be from any era up to the present.
Judging from my 442 that has quite a bit of its finish worn off from riding in a pocket holster, it must be the one I use the most, and would keep no matter what. Grab and pocket for a quick run to store.
My next favorite is a steel 3" model 60 that rides in a Galco holster..
fortunately, limiting myself to one J frame is silly.
Well I have 4 J frames, making a choice like this is hard.
I think I would stick with my Model 60, purchased new in the mid 1970s. I carried it a lot for years, worked on the triger pull to make it "comfortable". Gun has been a 100% reliable and is as accurate as a gun like this can be.
Second choice was my 642(no lock) but as stated it is the old 60 for me!
If I had to choose one it would be my 2 inch Model 60. Stainless steel for durability and a little - but not too much - extra weight for shooting comfort
It gives me the option of shooting .357, and the ability to shoot single action if I want.
OK, my choices in order of which ones to keep are:
- The model 60 no dash on the left.
- Followed by the 642-1 on top right.
- Lastly the 640-1 Pro Series on the bottom right.
Why? I've owned the 60 since the mid -80s so I'm attached to it. As a bonus it is a great shooter.
The 642 is light enough to pocket carry without pulling my shorts down.
My 640 Pro Series has made four trips back to Springfield to fix poor workmanship issues. I think they have finished building it, but who knows what will go wrong with it next! For that reason my 640 would be the first to go...
While I really would miss my M60 no dash and my 640-1, I'd have to take my 340 M&P as it is my most carried revolver. As others have said about their various J-frame models, it's light weight and size make it great for concealment. Now, I've got to say that .357 is punishing through it, but having the capability to use magnum is a (rarely used) plus.
I've got it, thankfully among others. It's the Model 640-1 made in the mid 90's. It's my all time favorite J Frame and would be the last to go and only then under great duress!
