which one would give you more pleasure. The collecting thing only works if you can and will part with it when the price goes up to your satisfaction. If you leave it behind for a family member how will they know what they have and its value on the open market. For me there is no real collecting except for personal use and enjoyment when it goes b a n g.

As for Santa..... a pre 29 with 4" bbl would work great....shooter grade even better.

Which would you add to the collection, a 696 with blue case and items or a 646 that has had the backstrap textured with no extras......I am leaning toward the 646 since I already have a 624 and 24 in the short barrel versions......and until I can get my hands on a 610 the .40 will pinch hit.

Anything else aside from my S&W 500 3.5" PC is going backwards. It's so challenging to reload for and shoot and a never ending source of entertainment at the range. Entertainment in the form of some people wetting themselves when they hear it go off.

What is "backstrap textured"? Any substantial modification of the gun would seriously decrease its value to me, even if properly done. Something to consider...

I am not sure what was done to it, but it doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look good........

I have a .500 in the long barrel so that caliber is accounted for. And yes it scares the heck out of me when I shoot it but that's the entertainment, plus it is extremely accurate.

I'm a shooter so I'd like a 627 Pro or PC with a straight uncanted barrel,
cylinder gap of .004 to .005, and a clean straight forcing cone and barrel crown .

I have neither...I'd go with the 696. I still somewhat regret passing up one several years ago.

I would get the 696. The 646 has no appeal for me, but the L-frame .44 is something awesome.

Which S&W 696 or 646

I like my S&W Model 696-1 44S&W Special,
but then I like the 44Spl Cartridge a lot and
reload it, making it easy and inexpensive to
enjoy.

My 696 was New In the Box, with all papers,
and unfired, that did it for me.

I don't know if I would enjoy the S&W 646
40S&W with Moon Clips. I think the Ti
Cylinder is neat and I like the longer barrel.
Just me.

After seeing the Bubba-fied job on the back strap of the 646 there's no question which I'd take. The 696 would be coming home and spend some quality time with the 696 that's already in the safe.

The 610 is the only 40 shooter i would consider and I still wouldnt like it being the only oddball rimless cartridge revolver in my stable.
696 > 646 everytime here.
