Yesterday found me at the range with my 627 Pro and 617 10-shooter, both 4"-ers. Also, it was time to shoot my 296 again - this time with wood service boots. They all have a reason or two to consider them, as does my first S&W, a 625MG in .45 Colt - gift from my wife. The utility of .45 ACP is hard to discount - my 625JM is a keeper, too.
The MG is nostalgic - and has thousands of homebrew rounds waiting for it here... but not much in stores locally. The same with that 296, even though it's really for protection - even pocket carry in some cargo pants. The 627 has the benefit of .38 or .357M ammo - available everywhere, when homebrews aren't available. Then there is the 617 - and .22s are available - or were - everywhere. A great plinker. When I run out of homebrew .45 ACPs, I can certainly find them elsewhere. Tough decision.
If some sort of self-defense was required, it'd be one of the above. I guess for a promise of a future in plinking without my homebrew ammo, it'd have to be the .22 rimfires - the 617. Here is mine with the DS-10-Speed speedloader - real fun:
Yeah, I could survive with one of the trio above. Plinking with a .22 really never gets old. I always wonder, what happened to the rest of my revolvers? Will someone else be as nice to them as I was? That worries me... just tell me they weren't 'collected' by Big Brother and smelted into flimsy green-wise people movers...

PS The 296 has it's OEM rubber boots back on it this AM.
