When removing the internal lock is just removing the plate with the lug enough or does that leave the possibility that the part the key goes into can come loose during recoil and cause problems ?

Removing the plate is good enought and the other parts won't come out under recoil.

Remove the whole mess. There are forum members who have had jams and written them up here, detailing the jam-up that happened with the lock internals, even after the flag plate was removed.

What you take out can't hurt you anymore, and not damaging the parts or grinding off the pin will allow you to re-install them if the next owner wanted the lock functional. Whine about the hole left after removing the key cylinder, but also about the holes in the cylinder face where the bullet noses are recessed, and the hole behind the trigger, and the hole in the muzzle, and the gap above and below the cylinder, while you're at it.

I can't complain, or suggest about something I don't have in my hands...yet, but I have ordered a 317 through my dealer. I have other S&W revolvers without the lock, but I am sure the 317 will have it. Is the problem with the IL isolated to the larger calibers, or should I be concerned with this Model 317 in 22? I will yank it out if I need to, but most of the comments I have heard are about issues that occur "under recoil".

Just put the plug in from Bullseye Smith.
It takes about ten (10) minutes, problem solved.

Imho, the terms "under recoil" and .22 long rifle should not be uttered in the same sentence. Except that I just did it too. :)

I don't think you're going to have problems, even if you leave it in on the 317. If you take the most outrageous claims about the IL, or I should say most serious claims, ALL IIRC were with centerfires.

Yank it, plug it...or not...and enjoy that puppy. They are fun guns.

I just "had" to have a fixed sight pocket-carry and I am no derringer, or automatic fan. I certainly am not bashing auto's....just have a fetish for revolvers.

This thing weighs-in at around 10-ounces. The good news is that it has a lanyard loop so I can tie it to my belt loop so I won't loose it.....like I do my truck keys!

Thanks for the specific response to my question magger and I do agree on the recoil thing....this was just an itch I had to scratch.

627 Pro with "The Plug" installed.

I don't think the hole everybody is complaining about is going to bother me a bunch. I have not (yet) had one apart to see and I don't know how thick the webbing is in this area of the frame, but I don't see why the hole cannot be tapped and a set-screw installed to make it look like a screw "belongs" there if it really bugs me.

Plug don't look bad though.

Me neither. I bet it won't take long for somebody to come up with a new thumb-latch to cover the hole.

That's probably as likely as someone coming up with something to fill the cutout in the the frame left by the flag...and having it match the looks of the frame.

Hugh

Try just leaving it alone, never had a problem with the lock. And IF I ever shoot someone. I sure as hell want that lock to still be on the gun. Or the lawyers will strip the flesh from my bones

Here's my thought on that...Internet drivel...but by all means do what makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

Let me apologize up front to everyone if this thread takes a turn because I felt the need to reply to that.

When it comes to the serious business of gunfighting, people have to do what they think is in their own best interest.

If you tap it, the factory won't work on it, Plus it will cut the sale price to the bone.

Good information and I appreciate that. I was just thinking it could be tapped and countersunk to accept a "gun looking" screw. I'll worry about it years on down the road, or not at all. Or, maybe opt for one of your plugs if I remove the entire mechanism.

Thanks!
