Some people have said that if you only remove the flag to disable the ILS lock that the other parts of the lock are more prone to come loose in your gun.

Has anyone documented and/or experienced this first hand? Does this sound true or is it unrealistic?

I hate to remove everything because I don't want a huge hole in the side of my revolver for lint and dirt to enter (I don't know of an easy way to plug the hole).

Yes its safe to remove just the flag/lug plate.
I carry a M66 2-1/2" with just the flag/lug removed and it is just a tight & solid as before I took it out and that was over 6 months ago.
I have put around 500 rounds through it since and no problems since I de locked it.
here is my M66-6 with out the flag/lug plate.

It might be safe....

But I know, with ALL the IL parts taken out, then NOTHING can go wrong.

the IL is a 2 part deal.
removing the flag/lug is simple and doesn't take much disassembly.
the lock assembly is behind the cylinder release bar and if you lose the mini spring that is part of the release bar assembly then you are screwed.
once the flag/lug is removed, the rest becomes redundant, and just fills that part of the void with out even a chance of interfering with the rest of the internals.
