I'm a little bummed with my new 629 V-Comp

I just bought a brand-new S&W 629 Performance Center V-Comp. I finally got to the range today and it is hitting 18" high at 50 yards with the rear sight bottomed out. I tried 3 different brands of ammo and had two other guys also shoot it. We all had the same result.
I don't know if it's relevant or not but the bottom of the underlug on the barrel is a few hundredths of an inch away from the frame almost like barrel is screwed into the frame at a slightly upward angle. If that is true, that would explain why it's shooting so high.
I have e-mailed S&W to get a return authorization to send the gun back for them to look at. I know they'll make it right but I'm just bummed that I have to go through the hassle of sending it back.

I have one too....although I haven't shot it much and don't shoot at the distances that you are. When I got mine, it came in looking as though it had 200 rounds put through it. It was disgustingly filthy and has scratches and scrapes on the gun. Smith took it back and completely redid the gun and made everything right BUT, I could not believe that a Performance Center Gun was allowed out of the building like this.

I wasn't impressed with the appearance of my gun when it arrived either. The bluing on the right side of the front sight was all messed up and it also looked like it had been shot a lot. I also didn't like the gap at the bottom of the barrel underlug but thought maybe it was planned that way for barrel-flexing or something.
I wasn't overly concerned since it's going to be a hunting gun but it didn't look like what I expected from a PC gun. It also came in a plastic box. My other PC guns have come in the aluminum cases.
I was willing to overlook the blemishes and such as long as it shot well but, as I posted above, it's not doing that either right now. I do believe they'll make it right but I wish it had been right from the beginning.

Epd1102,
I empathize with you. I am going through some quality (or lack thereof) problems too with my new 617. Good Luck with your repairs.

Looks like more and more of these threads are popping up all the time, be sure to check your gun out at the shop with a fine tooth comb before taking position is the new rule and not the exception. Hope they take care of you.

I had a 4 inch 629 in the mid-80's where the barrel turned while I was shooting it the very first time. Seeing your rounds track across the target is a very strange experience. S&W made it right, but it was disheartening.

100% agree. It's also a good idea to bring a bore-light with you to inspect the bore! After getting a brand new 637 with a gouge running the length of the bore I bought a cheap fiber optic bore-light and use it for every purchase.
