I'm going to propose a revolver design to Taurus.

Same for me but, my S&W collection is smaller than most I'm sure. Love them just the same. Top to bottom 5903, 686-1, 617-6.

I own fifty or more Smiths, but also a half dozen or so Tauri. It's not my first choice but honestly the brand has never let me down. Not as nice as Smith, Colt, Ruger, etal, but all of mine have been perfectly serviceable. Their 92 series is actually quite nice. The G2/G3/G4 series work as advertised; I carried my G2C for a number of years.

7 yrs ago my FFL took a Taurus revolver in trade for something he had at a gun show. Adjustable target rear sight on it. The top right corner of the "u" on the rear sight was chiped/broken off... This is on the press in "blade". He called Taurus and told them what he needed. They refused to ship either the sight or just the press in blade saying "it's a safety issue". He sent it to them. 7 yrs later, they still have it as "sorry, we haven't made any more of those yet". "And we can't send back a gun that has a damaged sight as that would be a safety issue."

They STOLE his gun and refuse to send it back. I told him I'd make him a new blade and notch it for him. He called Taurus and told them he has a machinist that will make on. They refuse to send it back. I'd guess they lost it years ago. Just this has kept me from buying a Taurus.

I have a HiPoint carbine in 10mm but will not own a Taurus.

I've heard more than a few horror stories about Taurus customer service or the lack thereof.

The quality in my current production Rossi RP-63 (a Taurus made product) is fantastic for a current production gun on today's market.

Design wise, it is inspired by S&W.

It is a lock free, hammer mounted firing pin, six-shot, 3" .357 Magnum revolver. It is the same size as a Colt D-Frame, which is smaller than a S&W K-Frame.

Best part about it? Cost me less than $450 out the door.

I wish S&W made a gun like this.

Heck the Taurus Model 856 is a six-shot snub-nose .38 and it is smaller than a Colt D-Frame and they make it in an aluminum frame. Unlike Colt right now, their current D-Frame sized guns are only steel framed guns.

That lockwork looks pretty darned good.

That makes no sense. Because when I worked for a FFL, we sent stuff to Taurus for warranty repair. Now, some of the guns, like the PT-99 would be sent in for repair for the busted rear sight.

Which was common since the rear sight was somewhat delicate. But people treated 'em like a regular Beretta 92 and try to go all Die Hard on the range.

Anyways, Taurus stopped making the PT-99 and eventually ran out of sights. They'd get the PT-99 look it over, contact the owner, and inform 'em "hey, we don't make those sights anymore. Sorry. We can send you the gun back as is or give you a credit for another gun."

And that's what they'd do. Send the gun back with a note saying "unable to repair, don't have parts in stock anymore."

Same deal with S&W, Colt, Ruger, etc. Ruger isn't working on Security Sixes anymore. And S&W is running out of parts for some guns like the older pre-lock models and even their first generation SIGMAs.

I had a S&W 342Ti that cracked the frame. Sent it back to S&W. They told me "we can send it back to you as is, or you can get a credit for something else."

Again, it makes no sense.

I've got a 608 and a M66. Within 2 weeks I had found parts kits from Everygunparts.com to get replacement parts. I do like neither have MIM parts but it's not like you can find parts online new or order from Taurus and repair turnaround per the Taurus chat group runs 7-8 months.

Now, back to the original post about making a 6 shot out of a 5 shot revolver…… get out your pitch forks and tar and feathers, I'm about to upset the apple cart.

There is a trend, and obviously, a demand, for little bitty revolvers that hold a lot of big cartridges. Thus, something has to be sacrificed somewhere. And that something, and somewhere is cylinder wall thickness. The walls on an M69 is pretty thin for a 44 mag; especially when you compare the 69 to an Anaconda.

And in response, the ammo companies keep loading the ammo lighter and lighter so it'll work in those frail, little guns. Look at the original 357 magnum, the Model 27, and compare it to a J frame.

If you need more ammo, gulp! maybe it's time to consider one of those dreaded bottom feeders. There. I said it. Look at a CZ Shadow 2 Compact, or a SIG P365. They're extremely accurate. Extremely reliable. And they carry 2-3X the payload.

Just repeated exactly what my FFL/Pharmacist told me. I told him get it back and I'll fix it. He said they told me they can't return it as such, it would be dangerous.

I had a Taurus Tracker .22/.22mag convertible. I could put rounds on a silhouette target at 100 yards all day long. Then, it got out of time and started shaving lead badly. Sent it back for repair, they "fixed" it and sent it back. Still shaved lead badly. Sold it. However, my Taurus M-66 .357 is a smooth shooter that I would put up against any of the older Smiths I own. I also have the Ultra Lite .38 snub which is a good shooter, and a 5 shot .44 Spc which is good. The rest of my Tauri are 9mm and a TX-22 which is a fabulous shooter.

I have three PT-92s. A very early one made around '83-'84 and two made in '93. They're all just as good as my Berettas.

This whole story smells of hoo ha! They won't send it back? He could call the ATF and report it as stolen by Taurus. Did he think about that? If all else fails, he can easily go to small claims court and sue Taurus. If he does, see how fast they send him a new one and an apology!

I'd like to see them reintroduce the 851 in stainless or a gloss blue like their Roscoe.
I really want a S&W 649 in .38 Spl but have seen any locally for a long time

I respect everyone's opinion here, but in the end I've got to buy what I'm comfortable with, both product-wise and price. I've chosen a few Taurus guns over the years and I've been very satisfied with the quality and useability. Some of them, like the two 1990s-vintage, K-frame-sized .44 Specials, are near-flawless with beautiful finishes, guns I wish S&W made. I have a 9mm revolver that I bought because the S&W 940 is almost impossible to find (although I did find one about a month ago and bought it, first one I've ever seen in person) and a very small 9mm semi that runs like a top and didn't cost an arm and a leg. No regrets with any of them, and I'm not embarrassed to show them off, especially when I tell how little I paid vs. the expensive brands.

By the time I got the story from him, he'd already gotten burned out by the whole episode.
Now, about the "hoo ha" bit... If you weren't there .... Know what I mean?

I don't own any Tauri, but I'm not too proud to own an inexpensive gun if it has a newer production date, etc. I haven't heard any nightmares about the later/newer production runs. Perhaps they were poor products, I would not pass up a hand gun because of poor quality or performance from before 15 years ago. From what I have seen on this forum there are quite a few unhappy S&W owners. And they cost a little more, new. A six-shot hammerless pocket revolver sounds good on paper. I recently bought a new hammerless Charter Arms .38 spl and I think two slightly larger 357/38 specials and they all work pretty good. They make the super cool Heritage Arms and I have a few that came with no regrets. No bad ones. BUT, if I had to send one back, Taurus I mean, and go from there before I bash Taurus's entire product line. The way I see it if I only pay <$500 for a new revolver and have to send it back, well, that's a cheap lesson learned.

Just think, a gun similar to the 642UC, but a six-shot .38 Special +P gun.

That gun kind of already exist. And probably better quality. It's called the Kimber K6xs.

But since tihs is a Taurus thread, I did just pick-up the 856 Defender used for under $300. Timing/lock-up seems to be solid, but I haven't fired it yet. Came with the Hogue grip which is too small for me, so I added these Pachs. I like the longer reach with a cover backstrap.

C'mon Chris, admit it. You had to be a little suspicious about that story! Taurus rightly deserves a lot of criticism for their early customer service, which was by all accounts atrocious, but give them credit for not stealing a firearm from anyone.

Not in the least. This guy was a guy I knew very well and who was honest as the day is long. If I were the LEAST bit suspicious I would not have made the post in the first place.
