And I do mean everything! Sticks, leaves, grass...if it can be picked up, he'll eat it. He inhales his meal in 5 seconds and then acts like he's starving trying to get more. We started adding green beans to his food to try and fill him up, but then he discovered beans come from the garden, so he started pulling up the plants eating beans, stalks, leaves, roots and all. He rips corn stalks out of the ground and eats them. Grabs tomatoes off the vine and down they go. Take him to the lake for training and he eats dead fish, weeds, muscles...anything laying on the shore. Vet bills are adding up, 10 months old and already treated for giardia twice because of his eating habits. He's a hunting dog, so I don't want to have to keep him on a leash. I suspect that when he makes his first duck retrieve this fall, all he will have when he gets back to shore is a few feathers that he didn't swallow. This dog would out eat a 400 lb pig. The good thing I can say is that he is not protective of food, we can take it out of his mouth, put our hands in the bowl, even the other dog can start eating his food...never a growl. Anyone else ever deal with a dog like this? With all the dogs I have owned, never one like this. If I fed him everything he wants he would be the largest dog in the world. The American Water Spaniel breed standard is 45 lbs max for a male, and I'm having trouble getting him under 50.He's on the left in the picture.

:ROFLMAO:

That's some funny dog!!!!

I have one dog who eats almost any kind of food, but he doesn't do what you describe. I do use a "slobowl" to control the speed of her intake but that's the only thing I control. She does eat weird things in the yard here and there; sticks/branches mostly. But it's only sometimes and probably on a day when she is bored.

She sleeps weirdly, though............:D

Scout eats just about everything. Rotten dead things found on the trail are immediately consumed. Fortunately, she rarely throws up...

She also latches onto anything found while walking the neighborhood and refuses to give up her treasure. The little mutant once grabbed a used napkin on the road and laid down. The Mrs placed a salmon treat on her snout trying to get her to let go, but no dice!

I love those dogs/Puppies some will test and eat everything I had a English Springer that would eat most things. Even if it is a hunting dog, you still can use a leash and have to train the dog. As you say, vet bills are expensive and if the dog eats something solid, it may cause and obstruction and would need surgery or worse.

Our first Greyhound would hardly eat when we first rescued her. Gun show buddy had a Greyhound rescue and he had 6 of his own! Kara did not know how to jump in back seat of pick up with back door open. She also did not know how to climb stairs. Took us couple months to get her used to everything. Once she discovered baked chicken breast mixed in her kibble she ate ok. Our vet told us someone had broken both her back legs most likely for insurance money. Baseball bat was what that person needed. She turned out to be a Very sweet hound but pancreatic cancer cause her to be put down. Tough time

Yup, eating the wrong thing has me so concerned that got pet insurance for this one. I have a feeling that they are going to regret giving me a policy!

Hey! Food is food, whether you recognize it or not. My dog love to eat rabbit pellets, so much that she has quit chassing the creatures that give here the tasty delights. What I hate is getting licked in the face and smelling rabbit ****.

Scout treasures goose poop.
I keep my lips shut tight when she gives me "kisses"!

I love that stupid dog...

As a general matter, I like dogs better than I like people. Dogs are honest to a fault, they don't lie or cheat, (though one may on occasions steal) Dogs are not fickle or vengeful.

One of my favorite dog stories is that I was doing a service call at a house in a very remote area. I came up the dirt drive, parked my van and between me and the front door was a dog on a heavy chain. (I hate chains on dogs) I walk up to the dog, like we were best buddies, tugged on his ear, and gave him some pets. I walked up to the house, knocked on the front door and when the owner opened the door, he was in shock. The first words out of his mouth was, "How did you get past the dog?" Perhaps if I had known that the dog had a bad reputation, it may not have worked out as well.
