Don't laugh! Some years ago (can't remember how many) I started noticing on TV on radio and in print references being made to ZOMBIES. I see ZOMBIES mentioned on this forum. I have no clue as to how, where and when all this ZOMBIE stuff got going. I have even heard of ZOMBIE guns. Somebody please help me out here, no joke, if there is a ZOMBIE gun, you know I want one!

It's a cyclical thing. 80s and 90s (early 2000s...?) the big thing was vampires. Now it's zombies. Some other creature will probably take over and be the next popular monster in time.

FWIW, there's a show on PBS, Monstrum, that came out with a 1-hour video (or 3 shorter videos, if you prefer) on the zombie, the origins of the legends and it's rise in pop culture. Good show, IMO. Came out last week.

Yeah, I kinda think that since Night of the Living Dead came out in 1968 it is pretty safe to say it predates any goofy tongue-in-cheek preparedness campaigns by the CDC.

The "resurrection" of zombie interest may have been with the TV series "Walking Dead". I watched the series for a few seasons.
I missed a couple of episodes, the whole thing changed to the point that trying to piece together what I missed wasn't worth the effort.

I have seen the zombie guns. I have seen the Zombie ammo, pictures of zombies and zombie written on a cardboard box. People must be buying this stuff or they would stop printing those cardboard boxes.

The Z-Max was also offered by Hornady in component bullet form. Now me, I go 180 degrees in the opposite direction of tremendous fads and that sort of nonsense, I don’t watch “The Walking Dead” and all the zombie related nonsense especially as it relates to popular gun culture holds zero of my interest.

But when they put the Z-Max bullets on discount because the popularity was waning, I cashed in on the nonsense!

The Zombie thing is a metaphor for a sudden, unexpected collapse of civilization and how to survive it. Neighbors turning on neighbors, lack of supplies, having to live on the run, violence everywhere, etc and so on.
It really could have been anything. An asteroid strike, plague, aliens or whatever. A few zombie movies were made and we just sorta settled on that as the means to our end.
I think it kinda started back in the 1950s with movies about monsters created by nuclear radiation. Man's fear of creating his own demise. Humanity just has a fascination with our own destruction. I think this fear is also responsible for the prepper movement.

I'm with you on that thought. I never have watched any of the
zombie shows and refuse to watch the unreal reality shows.
But hype anything enough and you will get someone to buy in.

There are numerous biblical accounts of resurrection of the dead which could be considered Zombie-ism, but of course the term "Zombie" was not used. So it's nothing new. As noted before, the first Zombie-themed movie was from 1932, although the idea of the dead rising from the grave has been around for centuries prior to that. In fact there is little difference between ghosts and zombies, except that ghosts usually don't eat the brains of the living.
