I'm sick

1911's are great guns. I've owned several, and I've liked them all. Also have owned Glocks (still have a G23C). It's all on what you like and what works for you. They're both great, but lately I've been cheating on em' both with a sexy little Model 66 in 2 1/2"...

Here's an interesting follow up to this thread ...

Rob Pincus, formerly of "The Best Defense" TV show and currently with Personal Defense Network, filmed a segment recently (this week?) with James Yeager at a training facility in Tennessee. I like Pincus, and find his TV work to be informative and practical, but pairing up with this Yeager clown is a big disappointment for me. I'm not talking about Yeager's outlandish pot-stirring rants about Glocks vs. 1911s, but rather his arrogant, amateur hour attitude and presentation on the video. The guy comes off like a generic gun nut loudmouth, all talk and no walk, and everything a quality instructor should not be.

It's really surprising that Pincus would do anything with him ... and it made me drop the idea of subscribing to Pincus' PDN. I actually posted a well-worded (and thoughtful) comment on Pincus' FaceBook page expressing my dismay at his involvement with Yeager ... it was deleted by Pincus in an hour's time.

In short, I love my "junk" Para single stack 1911 that's had ZERO failures in over 5000 rounds of use. Typical 1911 maint required, but I like tinkering. When it's been at the range, ZERO problems have came up. When I take it hunting on my hip, ZERO problems have risen.

I love it, and plan on buying a few more.

It's also my EDC until my SP101 gets fitted to my needs. Then I'll keep it in rotation along with my XD9sc.

Quarterhorse... "..until my SP101 gets fitted to my needs".

You must be talking about a holster? It is a very nice revolver!

I used to build 1911s, before everyone else got in the act. When Colt was building their civillian "government models" using the craftsmen he was talking about, it was true that many of them wouldn't function out of the box. But I have always wondered if the problem was they were just trying to get them on the market due to the high demand. The internet commando in the video, and that's all he is, never mentioned any real experiences, and certainly nothing that had to do with manufacturing, and simply put, he's wrong.

If he's never seen a malfunction with a Glock, he's lying, they are no better than the person shooting them and I've seen them fail a lot just with the small PD I worked for and the several others I requalified.

Keep your 1911, and keep it clean. Learn about it all you can and stop watching idiots with cameras that don't know jack about guns.

I'm glad I didn't have Internet when I was a young 19 year old infantrayman in Vietnam. I would have been scared to death to know that 1911a1 I crawled through a couple tunnels with would get me killed. I didn't know all that mud I crawled through would cause it to quit on me.

Same with my M16a1, It wasn't until I got the Internet in the late '90s that I found out that it wouldn't work.

Oh Well.......I'm safe now, I have the Internet to keep me safe.

Having said that, I have two 1911s, one is a 1911a1, (1942 colt frame, USSC slide) and a series 70 Gold cup.

Yeap I got them to jam. I found out that if you use cast bullets, row them around in Lee liquid lube, then after loading tumble them in walnut hulls, and DONT clean the excess wallnut hulls off the bullet, it wont feed very well.

Seems to work fine if you wipe the excess grease and walnut hulls off the bullets.

Where was the U-tube video that was suppose to tell me that.

The only reason I don't carry a 1911 as a CC weapon is it wont fit in my pocket like my little J frame will.

When I saw this thread, before I even opened it I figured it would be Yeager. According to him there is only one gun worth carrying. A Glock. Good for him. I hope he's happy. ME? I will continue to carry either my Sig or one of my Smiths. And I will do just as well as him and his Glock.

What's with the little hitch in his right arm/ shoulder? Am I supposed to think he's a tough guy who could kick my ***? Just wondering.

Second rate gun platforms don't last 101 years and have...

3. Gunsmiths making a living off it

Whether you like Yeager's deliver or not, all he's saying is based on his extensive exposure on the range you have minimal problems with the Glock series of handguns, and that's not the case with 1911's. I agree with him.

And there is a obvious reason why some gunsmiths make a living working on 1911's, unlike Glocks.

Nobody, and I mean N O B O D Y, has the right to mess on the other guy's fun. (as the poster/youtube 'expert' is). Speaking for myself, I've found that when I blurt out some offensive trash, I usually find out later that I was ignorant on the topic.

In this case, the OP could have phrased this as a question, the answers to which would reinforce his (alleged) decision. e.g. "I just got a 1911 and am having second thoughts, can you help me understand why I made a good decision?"

I too want my minutes back!

Your actually saying that a Mil-Spec 1911 is less reliable than a Mil-Spec GLOCK?

Oh baloney. Some gunsmiths don't work on 1911's because they don't know how!! ANYBODY can take apart a Glock and replace parts. Many of todays so called gunsmiths are glorified parts changers. NOT gunsmiths.

And people buy Glocks for three reasons.
1. Because cops carry them.
2. Reliablity
3. Too lazy to learn how to take care of a 1911.

How many of the very best competition shooters shoot Glock? One. Dave Sevigny. Most others shoot the 1911 or some variant.

I wonder why?!

Glock is one of the few guns that a person can ignore and abuse. Yes they are great. No they are not perfect. Glocks and 1911's are not the problem. People are the problem. People don't want to learn to take care of their guns. So buying a Glock is easy for them. It's an excuse.

You know how many people that I know of that shot themselves with their Glock? Too many. Doesn't happen as much with a 1911.

Give a guy a Glock and another guy a 1911 that's been cared for and you'll see an even match.

I'm bummed out, just purchased a 1911 last week:(

Does anyone know if that gentleman had a T shirt on or was that a Tattoo?

He seemed to be a really nice individual, well mannered, very humble and someone you could trust your own mother with.:D

It is really difficult holding back how I feel about this super hero.;)

Life goes on, one other thing, notice he never turned around to let you see that third arm he has patting himself on the back.

I'm done and will go and fondle my 1911.:D

Consider the source.

A great many of the YouTube videos have about as much credence as you kid's favorite cartoons.

That's what I thought. Well, a couple things I do know for sure: (1) 1911s aren't for everyone, and (2) like anything else that they have made a few million of, there are going to be bad examples out there.

I have nothing against Glocks if someone happens to want one. They are just another well-made, reliable handgun... nothing special.

I didn't make a living working on them, but it was a nice supplemental income. But you seem to think that just because someone wants their 1911 worked on it means that it doens't work to start with. That's not the case usually, they just wanted it customized to their liking. With a Glock there isn't that much you can customize if you wanted to, but their owners still try, they just picked the wrong gun for the task of making it "personal".

Most of the cops around here choose the Glock, probably because they listen to idiots on the internet that tell them they are great and that they are idiot proof, sort of ironic there. And they have a lot of malfunctions, usually due to the lack of proper maintenance, but they are still malfunctions.

But the Glock has two serious drawbacks that were never mentioned in the video. One, they will fire without being in full battery, which I have seen 1911's do when they were hacked on by someone that didn't know what they were doing. But the second is that the 1911's frames aren't primarily plastic and were able to absord the blast of a ruptured case without damage.

1911's aren't my favorite handgun, and I feel that much of their popularity in todays market isn't based soley on their worth. But the Glock isn't better, not by a long shot.

But I do know where you're coming from, it depends on which range you get your experience from I guess.

I didn't bother watching the video. I carried GI-issued M1911A1s for sixteen years without a problem before they were pulled in favor of the M9s. (No further comment.) I carried a Glock 23 or 22 for a little over 2 years and never had a problem with them except the grip didn't feel right. I'm currently back to carrying revolvers on and off duty. Guess I couldn't make that guy happy with any of my choices.

Too bad, that.

You must know a lot of morons.
Personally, I don't know anyone who has shot themselves with anything, let alone be able to say "You know how many people I know who shot themselves with Glocks"? Sounds like Yeager in reverse.
