Let me start off by saying hi!...my name is josh in not new to firearms but I just purchased my first handgun. I've been researching for a long time and i decided on a fullsize M&P 40. I was dead set on getting one but this weekend I went to a gun show and walked out with a 9mm shield. So far I've put about 150 rounds through it and im not disappointed with my decision. but I was wandering what everyone else thinks about the 9mm sheild. Please let me know if there is anything I should look out for......THANKS.

Welcome Josh and congratulations on your purchase. A Shield in 9mm is an excellent choice whether you are a new or experienced shooter. One thing I can be sure of it won't be your last gun :)

Welcome to the forum & congrats on a great choice in pistol!

I own a Shield 9 and absolutley love it.... I trained with it, practice with it, passed my CHL test with it and now its with me almost everyday.

I suggest keeping it well cleaned & lubed according to instructions and the best ammo I found so far is 124 gr. FMJ Freedom munitions & 124 gr. Monarch JHP, and the Winchester "Train & defend" series of ammo and finally Hornady "American Gunner" 115 gr. XTP. But the pistol seems to like 124 gr. ammo better than 115 gr.

Have fun!

Welcome and congrats..
Now on to the warning...
Most people seem to have an issue with their M&P's breeding. One day you have one, and before you know it, you have 2 or more (usually more). Be warned, there is no known cure for this disease!

The Shield is a fine gun. I got mine in November. A few minor things to watch out for. Relatively stiff recoil springs. Compared to some other guns, getting the slide to the rear takes a bit more effort. Just don't baby it. It'll work fine. Also, because of those stiff springs, the gun needs, at least, an average amount of recoil from the ammo to cycle the gun. It'll loosen up after a while. Several folks have reported their guns shoot left of POA. Just adjust how your finger touches the trigger. Use a bit more finger. It'll get right on. Compared to "target" pistols, the trigger pull can be heavier than what some are used to. The Shield is not designed to be a target pistol. If you must have a lighter trigger, there are some very good after-market parts to help with that. Good shooting.

Welcome to the Forum.
I got my Shield9 almost 3yrs ago, when they first came out and haven't regretted it. It's actually the only M&P I like.
Congrats on a fine choice.

Welcome Josh. The S&W forum is a great source for information on most Smith and Wesson topics and beyond.

Not to start a 9mm vs. .40 cal debate, but I prefer 9mm (and .45acp) to .40 for many reasons.

As a first gun, the 9mm Shield is a great handgun and 9mm is inexpensive and fun to shoot. Does yours have the external safety?

If you want to do some research here either scroll back in the M&P sub-forum or use the "search" feature (found above your name in the upper right hand corner of the home page). A lot has been written about the Shield.

Be safe!

Welcome from North Carolina from another Shield 9 owner. I was told by S&W that it is their most popular CCW weapon. You made the right choice.

I don't have a Shield - yet. That's on my list after I buy a much-coveted M&P45C. I presently have an M&P40 & a 40C which I'm very pleased with.

Welcome to the site!

Welcome from Louisiana!

There is one thing you should look out for...S&W revolvers, J's, K's, L's and the worst of all N- Frame S&W revolvers, They are highly addictive.
My avatar is a N-frame model 58 in 41 magnum and led me to my addiction. Avoid them at all costs....You can't own just one....

Yeah I acutely got one with the safety...like I said in my frist post I was really looking into getting the full size which I still might down the road. Mainly because I'm left handed and refuse to adapt to the right hand society!...lol...but I've done a lot of research on many makes and models and I kept coming back to the M&P...so far I love it!...one question I keep reading about the apex trigger and great it is!...unfortunately I'm the the Type of guy that likes to see and touch and try things out before I buy but it's not that easy sense I don't know anyone that has one!...what are some of the benefits or cons of such an upgrade!.....also thanks to everyone for being very welcoming!...I hate joining a Forum just to hear people bad mouth others for the decisions they have made!...so thanks everyone.

It's a great gun. It's in my edc rotation. Easy and fun shooter.like chiefstealth said, don't baby it. The spring is real tight but will loosen up over time.

Congrats,
FS and Compact .40's for me.:D

And then this sickness leads to other brands also......... AND THEN the revo bug bites.

Welcome aboard, from another new M&P owner! I own the 40c but my wife owns the Shield and I find myself using it as well.
