I got this in an e mail from another member. I don't know the original source of the info but I'm sure it's correct. Sorry about spacing I give up trying to compact it.

Congress passed a new food origin law and the president signed it into law...they no longer have to tell you the country of origin where meat is produced or processed or whether it is imported into the USA... much less from which country it came from.... Legislators from both parties voted for this....dern few voted against it....

The hogs will still be raised here, but slaughtered and packaged for sale there before being sent back here.

I don't believe it, because it makes no economic sense. Shipping whole hogs from the US to China, slaughtering them in China, and then shipping the packaged meat back to the US would be a massive waste of money. (Transportation costs.)

john this is absolute fact on Smithfield foods processing their American raised hogs & poultry in China then shipping it back here..Whether or not they do end stage processing there (put it in packages for consumers) or ship it back here in bulk is yet to be seen.. or perhaps both. My understanding is that the company who bought them also raises hogs & poultry there in China too, so some of those might be exported to the USA too.

Congress did the same with foreign made prescription drugs....& minerals, vitamins etc... The foreign plant must pass 1 inspection... then it isn't inspected or monitored by FDA ever again... Start googling the names on your prescription drugs.. some are made in India & China... scary.....it was only a matter of time before they allowed food/meat to be processed overseas as well.

It's been going on for decade's with car part's and everything else. Parts made in USA, assembled china, packaged in Mexico, sold to us as GM, FOMOCO, MOPAR, WHIRLPOOL etc. Free trade.
Go ahead and chow down, I'll take a pass.

Smithfield farms has the largest slaughter house and meat processing plant in the world. ...it's located in Tar Heel NC.

Like majority of US made food is better. They all use what's allowed by the FDA, which is a lot of garbage.

Just read up on this stuff. See what makes your white bread (already not good) look and taste fresh! Once you do I guarantee you'll never want to eat a hoggie or a sub again.

Meat? Even US born, breed and slaughtered animals are nothing more than walking chemicals. The hormones that are pumped into them to make them grow faster and bigger go directly to you. They are fed corn and most of it is GMO corn, neither of which they should be eating.

Grain? There is almost no more grain that your parents or grandparents ate. They don't exist in any large quantities. It's almost all exclusively GMO, which strips a lot of the healthy benefits in order to survive better. It's empty calories and genetically modified DNA.

Fish? Most come from farms. There isn't enough sustainable fish to feed the amount of people it does today. Even wild caught fish still has coloring added.

Fruit and vegetables? Go to a market street market in Europe and you can smell grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, apples a mile away. ....literally. You know someone is selling grapes but you have no idea where they are. You actually have to follow you nose. Here the are all sterile. No real smell of any kind, all look the same....perfect (fake).

Like coke? You it can be used to strip oil stains of off concrete, it's stronger than battery acid. Excessive consumption of high fructose corn syrup can cause same health problems as alcohol because the body concerts it to a form of ethanol. Another ingredient. ...4MEI....first of, does anyone want to eat something called 4MEI? Anyway that's a carcinogen. How about Bisphenol-A, it lines the aluminum cans ....that's an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine system controls hormones.

People were outraged when twinkees were going out of business. Did you see what it's made off? 37 ingredients and only 4 or 5 are actually recognized as food (flour, eggs, water, sugar). All the rest is chemical. The color and artificial flavor comes from petroleum by product. It also contains ingredients that are used to make soap. BTW!!!! American mass produced beer is the same. Mostly corn syrup and chemicals for taste!

And there is so much more **** that it's not even funny. I understand wanting to be patriotic but let's not pretend that China is the one poisoning us!

International trade is vital to our economy.

Coffee and bananas are vital for my breakfast.

I gave up on fish for the most part. It's too hard to track its history. Farmed fish is poison anyway. Take quality New Zealand produced fish oil if you're following doctor's (and the popular media's) orders to eat more fish because it's good for your heart. It's the fat that you want.
The issue of human slavery in the asian fishing industry is very ugly. People are dying for your cheap tuna and salmon. Easy to give up Tilapia, it tastes like mud.
I didn't like Smithfield before they sold out to the Chinese. They were early promoters of concentrated animal feeding operations. Hogs are permanently confined to cages so small they can't turn around. These operations are inhumane and an environmental threat.
If price is you first consideration in buying food; especially meat, poultry and fish you're going to be eating meat that has been inhumanely raised by underpaid and sometimes Unpaid people and processed in potentially dangerous ways.
And we wonder why we're sick.....

For anyone wanting to learn more about the dangers of the modern food paradigm (It's why your ticker went south you know) I'd suggest starting with Michael Pollan's excellent book "The Omnivore's Dilemma". Get it on Amazon.

Ranchers fought long and hard to make country of origin labeling mandatory, but we were outspent by meat packer lobbyists. We fought, we lost, and American consumers are the real losers in this. We out in the hinterlands can protect ourselves for the most part, but those who live in the big cities have no chance. This will probably not end well.

the only folks who oppose GMO foods with their added nutrition , not less nutrition... is the wealthy of the upper middle class & upper class whose children will not starve or do without the vitamins, minerals & extra protein that GMO crops provide...These folks also target every product that Monsanto, Bayer & the other seed & herbicide/pesticide companies produce... By the way, Corn sugar is identical to cane sugar, beet sugar etc etc... the human body treats it all the same.. Corn sugar is just cheaper to produce than any other type of sugar...The American farmer does a wonderful job of feeding the world... & very inexpensively too.

Producing beneficial GMO crops/herbicides/pesticides is a far cry from a company processing food oversees without any USDA oversight or inspection....then exporting it here to the USA without telling consumers where the food was processed...

Unless we have been hiding under a rock for 50 years, we all know who is behind all the chemical and other unsanitary products that have been going into our food supply. Just happens that other countries companies are worse than the one's we have here. Pick your poison, the choices are many.
I'll spend my cash locally.

The Smithfield takeover was in 2013, so this isn't exactly new news.

September 21, 2015

"Little Change at Virginia's China-Owned Smithfield Foods"

"After two years under Chinese ownership, the Smithfield company is doing well financially and employment is growing."

"A long-time resident says change comes slowly here, and people “kind of held their breath” to see what would happen to Smithfield. Florine Moore says people were worried about Chinese ownership of Smithfield Foods because “we liked what we had. When you like something, you don’t want it to change.”

But Smithfield Mayor T. Carter Williams says so far, he has seen few changes and no apparent problems.

“Nothing has happened at all. It is exactly the same. In fact, actually, it is right much better,” he said."

The original post needs some serious editing.(duplicated run on or something)

That said, it is unbelievable that here in Florida one must really read labels to find ORANGE juice that is 100% from Florida. Same with Shrimp and most fish.

We go down to the boat docks to get fresh real shrimps. Not the store!!

They push Tilapia which is a trash fish used to clean the bottom of farm raised fish and shrimp from Asia, it is disgusting!! Plus all the hormones and preservatives pumped into the fish so it can hold up on the shipment,

Same with most vegetables also.
