In Honor of James Bowie -- post 'em!

got this knife and sheath from an older gentleman who was a mountain man it the southern Appalachian area of the country. this was his "walking in the woods" knife. i would see him infrequently at flea markets, where he would set up a booth and sell Indian artifacts. best i could tell that was how he had made his living for quiet a while,at that point.he always kept a full beard nearly a foot long, and his hands had the look of years of hard outdoor use. i think he told me he had acquired the bare blade in a trade of some sort, and built upon that. the sheath as well.he would treat the leather with super glue and apply it with his fingers.he had been a trapper in his younger years he said. once while we were talking he offered me the knife for 20 dollars. i have it still.he was raised in west tennessee and i believe has passed away.

The only knifes I have close to the Bowie is two WW II US V-44's. They were originally to be survival knife's in air crew kit's. The Marine Raiders also used them. Have one with its original scabbard and one with custom made scabbard posed With a Ruger Bisley.

James Bowie gave his life at the Alamo fighting for Texas independence 182 years ago this week. The Alamo fell on March 6th, 1836.

Ironically, until the most recent state legislative session Texans were specifically prohibited from carrying a "Bowie" knife anywhere off their property... the term "Bowie" was used in the law.

This lovely Damascus Bowie style knife was a Christmas preent from my wife. I cannot find any maker's mark. Think I'll strap it on and walk around in front of the Alamo... ]

I, for the most part, don't like large knives, but that one is a beauty. Your wife has good taste.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

The bowie is a classic and I have a few that are buried around here somewhere. I know a bit about knives, but there are some on this board who are truly expert commentators for the category.

@ the OP, my best guess is that it is from Pakistan. Very nice gift from your wife.

When I get around to it.

MUCH plainer than the rest of these, & not even assembled yet.
