Indian Head Pennies

I have a bunch of Indian Head pennies and another bunch of Liberty Head nickels. None are in collectible condition, but they are ones that my Mother sorted out of circulation over the years, so they have nostalgia value to me.

I was in a stage production of "To Kill a Mockingbird" in Frederick, MD back in 2000. I played the part of Sheriff Heck Tate. In that story there is a reference to "slicked up" pennies found in a tree. The actor who played the lawyer Atticus Finch gave me a pretend business card and attached two Indian Head pennies to it. I still have them.

I used to collect (40-50 years ago) indian head pennies for investment purposes. Only key dates (1877, 1908-S, 1909-S ) and BU common dates. Haven't had one in my possession for probably 30 years now. The coin collecting market went into a slump 20-25 years ago and hasn't recovered yet. Now it's all silver and gold speculation. Only ones I collect now are silver world crowns, not for investment but for the variety of appearance.

I used to have a couple....

They increased in value after I inlet'd them in to a pair of ivory stocks.

I have 3 or 4 that were given to me. One was minted in 1904, the year of my Dad's birth, and another 1909, the year of my Mother's birth.

I also have a large cent that is so worn it is barely recognizable.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I had a few lying around, but not in good condition. On a similar note, I found a very worn 1937 Indian Head nickle the other day. Features are worn, but the date is readable.

If nothing else, it's worth $0.05.

Too bad it can't talk, then it would be priceless.

If I had one that could talk, it'd probably only speak in Sioux, Cheyenne, Chippewa, etc. and I couldn't understand a word...:D

If I owned Krugerrands, I'd probably have to learn Afrikaans to speak to my coins. And then, no one would believe me! I have enough trouble trying to convince people that I once saw a UFO, verified on USAF radar.

Hey GaryS. I suggest to carefully inspect your 1937 Buffalo Nickle. If a D mint mark, check further for 3 legged variant. They can be very valuable. Google it. Also sent you a PM.

I used some of my grandmother's inheritance to make a "memorial" of her. She was 1/4 Cherokee, 1/4 Chickasaw, and 1/2 Irish (Registered on Dawes Role). Her mother had traveled on the Chickasaw Trail of Tears (there were several routes at different times during the Indian Relocation/Removal Period of 1832-36).

I took an OM Ruger Vaquero and had it converted to 38-40, case-hardened, engraved. Patrick Grashorn had some bighorn sheep for grips he had been saving for me. I also had an original 1892 takedown short-rifle in 38-40 that I had case-hardened and engraved. A matching Bowie completed the hardware. I had "de-constructed" an EPS money belt and holster as well as the knife sheath, using sinew lacing and a cordovan colored dye.

Now, the tie-in to this thread. I bought a bunch of Indian Head penny conchos (real ones-both sides are there) for the belt, holster, and knife sheath. Also inlaid one into the knife handle.

This will be going to my daughter when I pass on!

Would you mind starting a new thread (or PMimg me with pictures? Those sound like beauties!:)

I have a few of the pennies also some Buffalo nickles and some gold coins of the same persuasion. Have to go dig 'em out and take a few pics. There were a few types of US coinage that used Indian likenesses.
