Does ammo need to be sent via FedEx ground? Or, does it have to be shipped via USPS? I'd like to ship some inter-state, and want to do this right.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Last time I shipped ammo, I shipped by Fedex who only allowed ground shipping. I don't think that the USPS will ship ammo at all.

You cannot ship live ammo via the USPS. Ammo is a prohibited item.

You can ship loaded ammo via ground shipping only via commercial delivery service, e.g., UPS or Fedex.

341.21 Nonmailable Explosives

Nonmailable explosives found in the mailstream must be immediately reported in accordance with POM 139.117.

Nonmailable explosives include, but are not limited to, the following:

Common Fireworks. Fireworks are classified as Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 explosives depending on the degree of hazard. Fireworks include roman candles, skyrockets, helicopter–type rockets, cylindrical and cone fountains, pyrotechnic wheels, illuminating torches, firecrackers, salutes, and combinations of items that are designed to produce any of the aforementioned types of effects. All types of fireworks are prohibited from mailing.
Fuses. Fuses are classified as Division 1.3 or 1.4 explosives depending on the degree of hazard. All types of fuses (except safety fuses as permitted under 341.22) are prohibited from mailing.
Small Arms Ammunition. Ammunition is classified as a Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 explosive, depending on the degree of hazard. Ammunition that is regulated as a Class 1 explosive and designed to be fired from a pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun, as well as associated primers and blank cartridges (including those designed for tools) and propellant powder for use in any firearm, is prohibited from mailing.

It's illegal to ship ammo USPS.

Phone the UPS Hazmat help line 800-554-9964.

Small arms cartridges may be shipped ground only. I’ve used UPS and they had me take it to one of their facilities (not a box store). There's no hazardous material fee like there is with primers or powder. There is a weight limit, I believe it's 66 lbs. The package must be marked or labeled ORM-D (with an outline border around the letters).

UPS. Go to the service center, some franchise stores don't accept ammo shipments. Use the computers there to register and make out the label to present to the clerk. Any future visits are a breeze.
For some reason, I've never been able to get FedEx to accept ammo shipments.
Live ammo/explosives are forbidden with USPS. Dies, inert brass (un-primed), bullets are fine in the Priority Mail boxes.

I'm a contractor working for the Air Force...we handle all the ammo shipments at the base where I work. It's gotten so bad that we won't even use FedEx any more for shipments because of all of their extra requirements. I'm not knocking FedEx, they're a great company but it's so much easier to get a shipment to go out with UPS that FedEx won't even get a call when it's time to move ammo.

UPS will ship ammo. It needs an ORM-D , small arms cartridges label. Find one online and print a copy or save one off your next online ammo purchase. Ammo ships without a Hazmat fee. If the clerk gives you a problem ask to talk to the hazmat supervisor. You need to go to the ups depot not store.
