My shootin buddy called last night about a Smith revolver he inherited from his grandfather. I believe its a pre model 10 M+P 38 special. Fixed sights,square butt, tapered barrel, blued, serial number C729xxx. Can anyone tell me what year this gun was made? I'm gonna have him send me a couple pics later that i'll post.......Mike

With that serial, it is too late to be a pre-Model 10. It is an actual Model 10, a 10-5 I would expect, and should be so stamped, visible on the frame when you open the cylinder in what we call the yoke cut-out.

I talked to him on the phone and told him to look at the frame under the crane and had him send me the pics. Guess i should have had him send a pic of the frame. What year did the model numbers start?(Model 10,Model 15 etc.)

Model numbering in general began in 1957, although for this model not until mid-1958. I have a Pre-Model 10 shipped in Jan. 1959 still without number.

The Model 10-5, one of the most common iterations, was produced from 1962 to 1977. During the same time, the 10-6 was the Heavy Barrel equivalent.

thanks everyone for the help....once i got him looking for the model # in the right spot it is indeed a 10-5. I had to send him a pic of my 15-3 with the cylinder open before he figured out where to look haha. Thanks again.....Mike

Nice. Looks like a well maintained revolver. The 4" standard barrel is a classic. The Model 10 was carried by many law enforcement officers over the years. I carried a nickel model 10 in 4" as an officer in the 1970s through early 1980's.

Nice model 10. I have a police trade like it and it is one of my better shooting guns. I never did like the standard tapered barrel until I got older and now they are my favorite.
