Inherited a Model 41

I've been looking into purchasing my own 22 pistol recently (I've been using my husband's SR22), and fate bestowed a Model 41 upon me this weekend. I will openly admit that I don't know much about it, but have been reading as much as I can on this forum, S&W website, YouTube, etc. I know that CCI SV is the recommended ammunition, are there any other tips, tricks, insider knowledge that you all can pass along? My hope is that I can eventually use it in competition.
Also, the serial number is 779XX. I'm thinking this was production date around 1967?

Welcome! You have one of the best .22 target pistols ever made. It may like CCI but other brands of standard velocity .22 may work better; each gun will have its own preference and trying different types may be needed. Match ammo is made to closer tolerances and is usually priced accordingly.

I would guess 77,900 would be earlier than 1967 but others here will know for certain. Enjoy!

Your M41 target Pistol is exceptionally well made and is a very very accurate Target pistol. There are 5 different trigger pull adjustment notches that will yield a trigger pull from 2.25 lbs - 3.25 lbs depending on how it is set. See below and the first link will explain how to adjust it if desired.

M41's can be ammo sensitive and for the most part, yes the CCI SV works well in most of them. Keep it clean and use a light viscosity oil such as Rig#2 Oil or Rem Oil. Do not over lube - just a light coat is all that's needed.

My experience has been that the currently manufactured Magazines are not very good and there are function and fitment issues with them. If you want to get more Magazines I'd personally recommend getting a few older ones - they work much better and are better made. Cheap Magazines can, will and do adversely affect the M41's reliability and smooth running.

One of mine does not comply with CCI but is rock solid with other brands like Topshot and Norma.
So each is their own but when you find the right combo they work flawless (if you do your homework that is)

Agree with the new magazines. You need to tweek them.

SN 779XX may be closer to 1965. Jinks/S&W folks can determine specific ship date.

For some reason it looks like my last reply didn't post, so forgive me if this shows up twice. Thank you for this thorough info! I downloaded an owners manual as soon as I got home, and fortunately my husband is a veteran so he is very knowledgeable about cleaning, care, etc. (My ownership experience to this point is limited to my Ruger 10/22 and Charter Arms Undercover, so I'm working on it)
I do have one magazine for it, thanks to all of you for the heads up about the newer ones. I should have her in my hands in a week or so (out of state inheritance coming into Maryland is a giant headache), and I'm just eager to get to the range and see how she does. Lord knows how long she was in that attic!

As with all 22's buy an assortment of brands and see what it likes. I have a K22 that loves Federal Auto Match. I have two identical Winchester 52 true bull guns, one loves Wolf Match Target and the other just slings it.

Thanks to all of you for the great info! My personal ownership experience up until now has been a Ruger 10/22 Takedown and a Charter Arms Undercover, so this is a whole new realm for me. My husband is a veteran and has about 20 more years of experience than me when it comes to firearms, so I'm fortunate to have him by my side to help me out.
I do have an owner's manual that I downloaded (most recent version, I'm assuming it will still be applicable?), plus two different brands of ammo from the 10/22, so I'll start experimenting once I get to the range. I have one magazine at this point- are there reliable resources for additional magazines from this era?

I would suggest your local gunshows and used box's at your LGS. Those will be the best and cheapest place to buy them I would suspect. These are a really nice target pistol. One of the finest ever made, you should have a lifetime of fun with it as well. They are that well made. Try the CCI-SV 1st if you can as its usually the best ammo you can feed it. Mine both work really great with it in them both.
