I have found a 3" non-pinned 29 barrel and I thought about installing it on my 29-2. What modifications need to be done for me to do so?

And is it worth the effort?

Thanks.....

No big deal. The pins were found to really accomplish nothing. The most elegant way to do it would be in a verticle mill and making the pin "notch" with a ball end cutter, but just filing a "notch" will do. You just have to measure and get it in the right spot.

As I understand the threads are different between pinned and non pinned guns, are they compatable?

My understanding is that they just didn't drop the pin, that the thread design was changed so that the threads were a crush fit, providing a tighter assembly,in lieu of the pin.
I'm certainly no expert and I think a later barrel can be installed. You just need to accomodate the pin, mostly for it to look right.

The threads are the same and both styles of barrels are "crush fit" to some extent.

If you have the correct tools, the new barrel will probably need need to be set back a turn so the thread can be timed for the front sight to come up correctly, a slot milled in the barrel for the pin, the B/C gap adjusted, the forcing cone re-cut after any shortening if the barrel is set back and the ejector rod shortened if necessary after a barrel set back. With a 3" barrel, the ejector rod may need to be switched entirely. Depending on what length the original barrel is, you may need to replace the rear sight blade.

Just a little more involved than unscrewing a bolt and installing another. Not extremely difficult but involved.

Right, what he said.
Since I don't have all the right tools, that's the sort of thing I pay my gunsmith for.
