A local shop has this revolver offered at $700 + tax/state fee. The rear sight is a Millet, front a gold/brass bead, it wears the original S&W medallion Hogue, target hammer/polished target trigger (both stainless or flash chrome-whatever S&W was doing prior the cc parts) and, drumroll please, ports on the end of the 5” barrel that are in the Magnaport style. The timing/lockup/action are excellent and very smooth.

It definitely has been shot, has a box though i didn’t ask to see it. I’m having carpal tunnel surgery next week so I won’t be shooting for about a month or so, I’m in no rush to get it but it seems like a good price for a shooter grade gun.

Enablers step inside :D

It’s a shop/range so they’re open 7 days. I’ll go back on Sunday and see what more I can find out. Unfortunately the gentleman that handles the used inventory is off Sunday and Tuesday so no opportunity to make an offer if i decide to pursue it.

Sounds like you found an interesting piece. If you could get a look at the box for the s/n and Product Code, that would certainly help to identify the revolver. Model 629-4s were introduced in 1993 and only continued until 1997 when the 629-5 was released. The full lug 5" bbl. brings a 50% premium according to the SCSW 4th Ed. That revolver probably started out as a Model 629-4 .44 Classic Stainless (Hogue stocks, micrometer rear sight), but may have been modified with the Mag-Na-Ports and front sight. I couldn't find any Product Code listings for a 629-4 with 5" power ported barrel. Regardless, $700+ sounds like a great deal.

If the ports are Magnaport style I’d guess they may be an aftermarket addition to the gun. In any case, if it seems good mechanically and cosmetically otherwise, I wouldn’t be bothered by that. The price is fair by today’s standards. I don’t need another .44 Magnum but I would almost certainly be a buyer if I saw that gun. (“Just the facts, Ma’am.” Any perceived enabling is purely incidental. :D)

Agreed, couldn’t find anything in the catalog. Years ago I had a 4” 629-1 the prior owner had Magnaported, the ports on this one look identical. I hope to get by to look at the box today.

Steve, do it :D

Update: product code is 103636 and......it has the original parts. a note stating the shop where it was originally purchased (local), plus a work sheet from Magnaport. I'm also looking at a 1973 28-2 so it'll be which ever I can make the better deal on :D.

Here are two pics:

Query: has the barrel been shortened? The “629 CLASSIC” looks unusually far forward.

For $700 my only real question is “Why didn’t it come home with you?”

I don't believe it has, here is an auction that just ended on GunBroker, and it appears to be the same. Funny thing is, to me anyway, if they used a reprinted end label, why didn't they use the correct product code?
Just a moment...

Nope, not the same gun in that auction; the one I’m taking about has been clearly posted as a -4 with the corresponding product code, NOT a -3 like the auction piece. Also I’m in Colorado, as seen in the details in the top right of my post and as stated in the very first post it’s local to me.

The matching box is also clearly marked that it’s a 5 inch barrel. The 28, while very nice, went for more-over $900 + tax/background check fee-than I was willing to spend.

I realize that it's not the same gun as the one you're referring to, and never tried to imply that it was. I was merely showing an example of a 5 inch classic to represent where the stamping on the barrel was, to show that your gun didn't have a shortened barrel.
