Interesting box...

... my wife often brings home things she thinks I could use in the shop. Not long ago she found this box for $10 at Goodwill (where else?). It's interesting, and I'm sure it used to house some kind of precision tool or gauge. I haven't been able to find anything like it on line, and haven't figured out what it was made for, nor have I figured out a good use for it yet. Any Ideas? The length of the box is about 48 inches, and its solid, and pretty heavy.

Brown & Sharpe made industrial measurement and lathe tools. They made everything from dial and caliper gauges to metal lathe threading machines. The case looks to me a bit large for a small micrometer so maybe some sort of metal lathe tool? Nice box though.

I’m going to guess it was made for a vernier height gauge. I’ve got a shorter one in my took box, but I think it’s a Starrett. Brown and Sharpe made excellent machinist tools.

A vernier height gauge looks like this. If you know how to read a vernier scale, your old! Most people have used dial or digital tools for decades, but vernier’s don’t strip teeth or have their electronics go bad.

So, figure out what sort of measurement device needs a box that size and you'll be getting close.

What to do with it?

I don’t know the sectional dimensions, but it might make an excellent transport box for a Unertl or Lyman rifle scope or a long spotting scope if you re-did the interior.

Interesting. If you don't mind my asking, what kinds of things are you measuring. I'd guess machined parts, yes?

Yes, I have a machine shop where I make prototypes of new inventions. No telling what will come through the door next. Love it! I precision machine all metals and some plastics.

I also make all my own custom Smith revolvers to shoot in matches. Friends tell me "This is the REAL S&W Performance Center." Naturally I agree so as not to make them feel bad.

Agree with Ole Joe, looks like a B&S height gauge box. B&S made outstanding measuring equipment, still have a mic or 2 mfg by them. BTW, IMHO, if you cant read a regular measurement tool you have no business around machine tools....

I was thinking possibly a box for a large and really nice torque wrench, but a vertical height gauge seems more likely.
Very nice box though.
I’ll bet you couldn’t get a new one built for less than $275 - $300. Probably more.

I'll take you guys' word for it, but that box appears to me to be mighty large for a tool the size of the one in chad's picture. Maybe someone could explain that to me?

Height gauges, like calipers, come in a wide variety of sizes (heights).

I found these photos on the net. This box is for a 26” vernier height gauge, but the construction and hardware are very similar. I suspect a gauge over 40” would have a substantially larger base.
