Interesting conversation with S&W this morning

Called customer service to discuss the POI and POA issues I am having with my 386NG (see other post) and I told the guy how much I liked the Night Guard despite its problems. He said a couple of interesting things about the 2009 models.

First, he said that S&W is going to expand their Night Guard line ... to include, in his words, a "forty-one something" additiion.

Second, he said they were going to come out with a .327 Magnum in 2009.

And yes, I assume it will have the lock ... sorry!! Doesn't bother me, but I know some of you will absoultely pass on these.

Any hint on the frame size for the the .327??

.327 will probably be like Ruger new CCW...very hot at retail!!

2009 "SHOT" trade show will be in Orlando January 15-18 featuring all of the new products.

He made not hint about the frame size. I would hope it would be a J frame or even a K frame.

I know this round has not taken off, but I also think that Ruger drug their heels on the release of their SP101 in .327 because of the demand for their LCP. I am not sure why they have been so slow to release these revolvers. One can only guess.

I am still not sure the .327 is not an answer looking for a question, but if in fact S&W does release one, then I might have to look real hard at it ... if for no other reason than I don't have one!! I know, I am a hopeless addict ... but then again, I can always prescribe a "cure" for myself.

I suppose what popularity the .327 has been able to generate centers around it's defensive use for small concealed carry revolvers.

I'd love to see a traditionally manufactured K model Masterpiece with an un-lugged 6-inch and 8 3/8-inch barrels available for .the .327 Magnum.

Seems like most handgunners no longer desire fine range guns for target work, hand loading experimentation or fun plinking. Everything is "chopped and channeled" to be a pint sized concealed carry piece.

You know, you raise an interesting point. This round would be a blast from a K frame long barrel revolver. At least one 6 1/2" or longer. I think with the success of their Night Guard, they will most likely put one in this model series, would be my guess. But, a steel, long barrel would make me want to stop and think.

I talked with a Ruger rep this summer. He explained that the slow down with the SP-101s was due to a retooling at the N.H. plant where the revolvers are made. Apparently there was a learning curve learning to run the new whiz-bang machinery. He did say that the SP-101 production in .327 was being stepped up to a whopping 350 units per month. I guess it worked, cause I finally got mine.

The only ammo I've chrono'd is the 85HP. It is advertised at 1330 and I was getting 1391 out of the 3" barrel. I'm with you guys, I would love to see what it would do out of a six to eight incher.

Be interesting to find out frame size, and cylinder capacity of the 327 gun. Will a J-frame hold 6 shots of 327, or will they have to go to the five shot cylinder to survive the high pressure levels of the 327? Do it in an L-frame and get 7 shots easy, but can they fit eight? Will they use the 315 K-frame Night Guard as the base and give us a 6-shot K-frame? Lots of options for S&W to chose from, it will indeed be "very interesting".

Actually, I am with you guys. I would love to see a 315NG size 6-7 shot .327 Mag AND a 6 1/2"+ K or L frame 7-8 shot steel. That would be a fun field gun.

As far as a .41 goes, if ammo was more plentiful I would be leaning towards that round as well. But, not set up to reload ... yet!

Unfortunately, these things are like potato chips ... you just can't have just one. I would most likely buy all of them ... just because!!

A .41 Magnum Night Guard - OUCH!

I did some calculations on recoil.
210g @1300 fps = 18.56 ft lbs
175g @1250 fps = 12.80 ft lbs
That compares to:
629 3-inch using 250g PTHP @1250 fps (16.4 ft-lbs of recoil) or a 6" 629 firing the standard 240g/1180fps load (12.3 ftlbs recoil).

Ouch!

Of course, he did say .41 something. Maybe a "special" loading now? One could hope.

The .327 Federal Magnum
1. I doubt S&W will let Ruger have the CCW market.
2. Possible to see a M316 Night Guard? Possibly.
3. I can see two steel guns.
4. A Model 16 or 616, with a 6" or 8-3/8 barrel.
5. A Model 30 style with 2" or 3" bull barrel
6. I'd like to see a 3" and 5" Stainless M&P version too.

I do question whether the J-frame can be configured as a 6-shot, since the bolt notches will have to be centered on the thin part of the cylinder wall and the .327 is a 40,000psi cartridge. A six or seven shot K-frame would be sweet.

Keeping the traditional simple underlug on the K-Frame like the original Model 16 would be nice. But this is a true Magnum load, so I'd think adding the traditional half-shroud like a Model 19 would be in keeping with S&W tradition. (And look cool as well!) I pray they don't make it fugly looking like the angled M27 or M60-Pro.
