I found a J Frame this week with a square butt, flat latch and a 3" barrel. It is a really nice piece. The serial number is in the 390XXX range which makes it hard to determine the mfg date as there is a big jump in the book. Anyone with info it would be greatly appreciated. This is my first nickle finish.

I believe you have a Model 36 Chief Special that was produced in early 1966 . . . possibly late 1965. Very nice looking Chief.

I don't know why but the model 36 seems to have the most 'strange issues' of all the Smiths.
Here is a 36 NO DASH, 3 inch, matching numbered grips, but has NO trademark stamp.

Yep . . . I have one of those also . . . s/n 456212 shipped in September 1966 totally void of any S&W logo. If yours was a similar vintage, all I can guess is the factory damaged or temporarily mis-placed the logo stamp and decided to not stop production :D
