Interesting new cartridge

We are already shooting one; An AAC upper on a DPMS lower. Lee makes the dies as well. Our load is 19.5 H110 and the Sierra 125 gr. Gameking. It's already put venison in the freezer. The 300 Blackout is just the SAMMI version of the 300 Whisper, which has been around several years. S&W already have a carbine advertised for it. Bob!

Um, why? A 225gr bullet @ 1010fps or a 125gr at 2200fps?

Get the 7.62X39mm upper and have ammo, dies, components galore.

I guess something for everyone.............

the heavyweight is designed to be hard hitting in a subsonic, silenced package...
The lighter version is another way to run the same round...
It is ideally suited for silencer use, and was designed that way from the ground up....

There is no such thing as a 7.62 upper for an AR chambered in 5.56. The 300 blackout upper will fit any AR and the mags work as well. It's the same brass except shorter and bigger bullet.

Further, bullets of that dia are not as readily available as .308

I don't like new cartridges.they make me spend more money.good buy.

I guess you need to be brought up to date then...

Colt made rifles and uppers in 7.62x39 as well as other makers.

Now, if you are talking .308 (7.62), most major makers make AR style rifles that chamber it.

Colt is advertising their new modular rifle with interchangeable uppers in 5.56 and .308 (7.62)- both of which are less expensive and widely available.

It is entirely possible to get an upper in just about any caliber that will fit up through the magazine well of a standard lower, including most all pistol calibers. If you are willing to make it a single shot- most any caliber can be had all the way up to .50 BMG.

There is nothing wrong with another caliber...other than it's another caliber to shoot and likely accurate.
Logistically and economically, it'll be a nightmare unless you reload it yourself.

The loads are nearly identical to a .32-20 loaded to full potential on a strong action.

Um, yeah, there is. Not the 308 but the 7.62X39.

From Bushmaster's website:

Bushmaster Magazines for 7.62X39

These magazines for our new 7.62x39mm Rifle and Upper are similar the 30 Rd. .223 magazine, but due to larger 7.62x39 case size hold only 26 rounds. Other models are blocked to the indicated capacity within the same size dark grey hard anodized aluminum shell. They include anti-tilt followers, and the Bushmaster logo on the base plate. All can be disassembled for cleaning.

Specify: 5, 10, or 26 round capacity

That's what I was thinking when I watched the video. Don't you just love people that steal others inventions and put them on the market all hyped up as NEW ideas, with no credit to the real genuis behind them?

So you're saying J.D. Jones stole from the Russians? ;)

If he never gave them any credit, then yes he did. Although, there is a bit of a difference from borrowing a concept and copying a whole product.

I just found this Hodgdon data on another site, in case anyone is interested.

I am the project lead of 300 BLK and gave him credit.

http://www.300aacblackout.com/resources/300-BLK.pdf

"Pioneering work by JD Jones with the 300 Whisper®, and others with 300 Fireball and 300-221, have proven the concept"

And on that note, the 300-221 concept has been out since at least 1969 - well before SSK/JD Jones helped make it popular. Look at page 11 of that presentation for photos from the 60s. Thirdly, the concept copied the case head dimensions, body taper, and case length of a Remington cartridge called the 221 Fireball. So everything was invented by Remington, except for the necking up to 30 caliber part - which is done to every cartridge made by someone.

Obviously I owe you an apology, for the stealing remark. I couldn't find that information on a Google search, which isn't surprising.

Now that you've joined us here can I ask you a question? Wouldn't the .300 Whisper have worked just as well? The differences are very slight and the velocity listed in your link is pretty close to Whisper velocities from a 10" Contender. In fact they are so similar it looks like their load data would almost be interchangeable.

The "invention" I was referring to was the low noise suppression by using a big bullet in a small case, and I never named any names because I know it's been around for a long time. J.D. Jones has worked on his own developements based on the idea. I also don't care for the concept, unless you are really intending to use a suppressor.
