INTERNET SNUBBY MATCH

The rule this month was shoot from cover and be "creative". I think I met that criteria.

Shot with a S&W 640 Centennial and full house .357 loads.

1st shot hit the black. I was really pleased with this target, given the unorthodoxed shooting position. And I never have shot this way before. Saw it done on T.V. once.

Group measured right at 5". Target height was set at 6'.

I had Mrs. Purple Bikerr take the pic when I got home from the range.

Now that qualifies as creative!!!

10 Widely Spaced Shots

Well, I went to the range, and tried to be creative. I wanted to drive my car onto the range and shoot across the hood, using the car for cover. However they wouldn't let me get my car that close to the range. So I simulated my car wiht a high bench and sat in a chair behind it. Shot pretty good. Then I went home and read the rules. "Oh Godfrey Daniels", to quote W.C. Fields; when shooting seated, I had to use one hand. So I went back the next day and reshot, one handed this time. Shot 3 5/8 inches. Had a good group going but too often I let the front sight get a little too high.

I used my S&W 638,instead of the elderly M&P I've been using and which I put Sile grips on. The M&P is heavier, and has a better grip, particularly wearing the Siles. I shoot it better, but the pistol I stick in my pocket when I go out is the 638. I want to become more accustomed to it and will use it in the future.

I debated about sending this in, but here it is anyhow.

My M36 acted up big time - the hammer would come back to full cock, then just stay there until it felt like dropping.

Needless to say, this caused havoc on the target, with shots sprayed almost to 9".

It has never given any trouble before, so this first time seems to make up for all those trouble free years.

Anybody have any ideas on possible causes - and cures?

Thanks.

I'd have the sideplate off that thing in a jiffy to see what's going on in there. Pehaps a cleaning or a little lube might help.

All that entered won for creativity. I have to say Cyrano's 3 5/8" group is good shooting. One hand keeps it more than fair.

Prplbkrr made me smile! Thanks.

For September, we will keep it simple. 10 rounds 5 yards ONE HAND DA.

David

Man, I keep forgetting that this is still going on. It took me awhile to go through all the threads. Looks like you guys have been having some fun! I haven't been to the range in so long I probably couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a cannon, and that's Not acceptable.
I'm glad the newest match is simple. I need to make it a point to get to the range this week.

True enough, but I'm dreading that. The sideplate fits so tight it is a major ordeal to get off. :(

I may have posted this before; if so, disregard it. About 1958 I was on the Army Air Defense Command pistol team and we went to Camp Perry. We had S&W 38 Special Masterspiece revolvers for the center fire match. I went to the S&W tent for something, and saw how they got the sideplate off revovlers sent in for repair. They took out alll the screws, removed the grips and cylinder, then held the revolver with the right side down. From the height of about a foot, they slammed the revolver down as hard as they could on a block of wood. The sideplate popped right off. I've got to say the first time I saw it my eyes bugged out but it seemed to have worked very well. Everybody was shooting K 38s so they had a lot of them to work on.

I've also heard that you can hit the left side of the frame with a plasic mallet once you get all the screws and grip off. Just don't pry it off: that will usually ruin the fit in the frame.

Slamming it down is scary. I've always been told to use the mallet, but it can be a real bear. I've seen it done in a shop, but....

After removing the stocks, remove the sideplate screws and then, firmly hold the gun sideplate-up and tap the gripframe repeatedly with a composition hammer (non-marring!). If no hammer, use a chunk of wood. You don't need to tap super-hard. The sideplate WILL eventually pop free and allow you to just lift it up and clear. Worked for me every time. Hope I helped.

to remove the side plate, try this.
Remove all the screws and then smack the back of the grip with the handle of the screwdriver. That jarring should cause the plate to pop loose.
Works for me.
Search You Tube for a video on how to.

Thanks for the tip! :)

Reading through this has now made my week. I can't wait to get back to the range and rent myself a snub to join in. The friendly "fun" you've created here, David R is an honor to you. Good going, and keep it going!
The humor and enjoyment from all participants is evident, and encouraging! Thanks.

I was at the range this morning and forgot all about this. I burned up three boxes of ammo through my 2 inch S&W Model 12-2. Jeez.
