Introducing, Honey!

As you may know, we lost Ted on Labor Day.

This, is Honey.

Honey is another rescue from a puppy mill. A 5 year old bitch who was never out of her cage until we brought her home. She was also never inside a house, on a leash, no training, just a dog. She is now with us, and learning how life should be.

She is a smallish Golden Retriever, at least compared to the three we have had (Seamus, Quinn and Ted) weighing 49 pounds and about 22-23” at the shoulder. She is slender, her matted coat is coarse, and she is fast! We treat all rescues as flight risks, hence the harness. She is learning to sit, on command, and enjoys being walked on a leash. She will grab a toy and carry it or bring it to one of us. We throw it and she gallops off to fetch it. Right now, she craves attention. Trying to make up for five years of being at the other place.

She is learning her crate is her place. At first she fought going in but now, scoots right in to get fed or at night. She is learning to be house trained and catching on well.

She just walked in to her crate for a nap.

Seamus took to her immediately and they romp a little but he is 9 and slowing down some.

It is good to have two dogs again.

Good for you and well done StrawHat! Beautiful golden. Rescue stories are great.

We have some friends that just rescued a golden retriever living in the same circumstances as Honey. She was a little shy at first but now is about the sweetest and friendliest dog you could ever imagine.

I know cats aren't for everyone but my wife, daughters and I have rescued five cats in the last decade or so. Here is a couple of photos of Abby and Walley Farkel.

Wally is the yellow cat lying on my son-in-law. He thinks he's a dog. By the way, Walley came from The Cardinal Shooting Center sporting clays range. (Sorry folks I'm not sure how to rotate one of the photos)

Excellent. Tomorrow we’ll be picking up a rescue. 1 yr old Patterdale female. We were not looking for a second dog. She kinda found us. Tomorrow she gets spade then comes to meet Dexter and Ozzy our cat who is as big as her. Haven’t picked a name yet.

Anybody that takes in a rescue is an angel in my book . We have 3 girls , two of them Aussies which we've had at least one for over 30 years . We've had our share of rescues , and you can't ask for better dogs . The poor things are just happy to have a home and have someone that loves them .

Honey has been with us 10 days and adapting to us and our lifestyle well. She seems to enjoy being in a house, has taken to her new food and enjoys the company of Seamus, our 9 year old Golden.

She and Seamus are at opposite ends of the Golden spectrum. Seamus is a stocky, well conformed male with a blocky head and heavy chest. Honey is slender, slight, almost petite.

She is also making up for 6 years of inattention. She is practically at our side 24/7. Loves to be petted and fussed over!

Last night we discovered a problem. There was a thunderstorm overnight. Honey is not a fan. She was running around and trembling, and cowering with each clap of Thunder. I finally sat in my Morris chair and grabbed her up onto my lap. Wrapped my arms around her and held her all night. She was less troubled but still not at ease. It was a long night.

But, I will do it again in a heartbeat!

Two months ago we adopted, as a rescue, a 5 year old female Doberman, that had been dumped in a state park after being part of a puppy mill. Her name is Beth. She is the sweetest thing. She loves having a home, a family and a large fenced back yard to romp, run and sniff in. She also craves attention, really likes having a large pad beside Anne's chair as her sleep pad. Beth is not a wild child and minds well. We love her a lot. It is so good to have a house doberman again. Our last three dobies were rescue dogs, that finally died of old age illnesses. We have had very good luck with rescue/adopted dogs.

Good for you.. Better for Honey. We had a Chesapeake...120 pounds...Thunderstorms were the bane of her existence. If we were home she had to be inside. But pick up a shotgun...ready to go. Always liked Goldens...but they could carry too much water hunting the water LOL. Pretty pup you have..Miss my dogs...but we still have our saved kitties Blackie, Max and Ruby Begonia. Rescues are the best. I have Chip a 9 year old Chocolate Lab. He is incredibly loving and last month when my wife passed away he was by her bed. He is still mourning her.
All dogs are incredible but a rescue for whatever reason more so.

I love the stories & photos you folks post about your K9 kids. I live vicariously through you folks who have dogs. I am a big dog kind of guy and had at least 1 and usually 2 at a time but now with a small house and small yard it would get kind of cramped. I currently have 2 feline fur babies and the older of the 2 is a rescue who is already the most neurotic cat I've ever seen. A dog would probably push him over the edge.

We do not have dogs, but we have had 7 cats over the years all either strays or from the humane society. We currently have 3. The most recent addition is Salem, we saw her in the green space behind the house over a year ago and began the long process of gaining her trust.

She is now on week 3 of being in the house and integrating her with the other 2 cats is a slow process as anyone who has gone through it knows.

She is loving, very good natured and well behaved. A little hissing here and there but no fur has flown so far which is a small miracle.

Her ear was clipped so she has been spayed and we were able to get her traveling buddy who was not nearly as wild and rehome her with friends.

I am glad we can give her a home and security.

We are currently on a business trip North of Chicago. Honey has adapted well to traveling, the 8 hour ride did not fluster her. She followed Seamus into the house we rent like she had been here before.

House training is going well. Only one accident here, the first day. It may have been we missed a signal, but I am not yet sure what her signal is.

Duck and goose season opened here on the 19th. I had Honey out for an early morning walk and a couple of hunters tried for geese. Honey likes gunshots less than she likes thunder! First shot and she was full speed for the door to the house. I kept her out and reassured her but could not calm her. In the house the sound was subdued but she is still not a fan.

And she went into heat. Quinn did that too on her first business trip so Deb and I had a bit of a laugh. A trip to PetSmart for some pants and things are under control. We got her AKC papers and find she just turned six. So, when we get her to the vet, we will talk about spaying her.

Nice work with Honey! I’ve had a couple dogs that were afraid of thunder and fireworks. I always stayed home with them and the wife took the children to 4th of July activities. Strange to me, but I recall neither dog was troubled by gunfire. I used to take them along when I would go skeet shooting. They just slept through it in the back of the car.

I had another dog that was very afraid of riding in cars when we got her. She overcame that fairly quickly and was fine riding along with the other dogs the rest of her life.

Happy to know that Honey now has her “forever home.”
