Introduction - another newbie

Hello all,

I just purchased my first S&W a couple weeks ago and found this gem of a site the other day.

I've owned and still own many other guns but I've never had a S&W before. I picked up a beautiful used nickle plated Mod 586 with a 4" barrel from a local dealer and I love this gun!

I'm here to learn how get the most out of this fine firearm and to learn how to keep it going strong so one of my lucky decendents may one day enjoy it as well.

Ahhh - you have the model that I have kicked myself time and time again for trading it off.

I carried a 4" nickled 586, for several years 1983 to 1990 until we got an "administrative" chief that decided we would no longer be allowed to carry 357 magnum loads due liablity issues. We were to carry the 158 grain, all lead, 38 special,+P hollow point ( I have heard it referred to as the Chicago load or the FBI load).

Anyway, I choose to switch to the S&W 4506 in 45 ACP and continued to carry the 586 as off duty. I had the department firearms instructor that found out about it and "highly" recommended that I stop carrying it and choose a self loading off duty gun because of the differences in trigger pull. He was a huge supported of muscle memory and those sorts of things - not that I disagreed and followed his recommendations, getting a Walter PPK as my new back up.

Well, what to do with the 586 - already had two other 357's so I sold it at the Dallas Gun Show April 1990 and oh do I wish I hadn't.

Thanks to all for the kindly welcome! I'll post a picture or two soon...must say, it is tough getting a close-up good photo with the nickle plating though....I think I'll have to try ourdoor lighting.
